1. Well, it is a business with the guaranteed clientele, that's for sure. And in Ghana, many coffin makers offer their clients a chance to put a personal touch in their final resting place. Jeff Koinange takes a look.

2. From across the street, it looks like a giant wooden toy store. Up close though, it's clear this is no ordinary carpentry shop. And owener, Pa Joe, is no ordinary carpenter.
3. For the 59-year old is a custom coffin designer. And these are what he calls his masterpieces, from chickens to snakes to luxury cars and even this. A giant beer bottle, a bier in the shape of a beer.
"So who would be buried in a beer bottle?"

"Two, three different people. Maybe you're a bar owner, restaurant owner or you like the beer, you drink the beer more."
4. In Ghana, like many parts of Africa, religion plays a critical role in everyday life. And those who don't worship in churches or mosques instead idolize inanimate objects, choosing to be buried in coffins signifying their past professions. Like this airplane made for a pilot, this piece of military hardware for a soldier, and this running shoe for an athlete.
5. Pa Joe boasts that he's the best design coffin carpenter in the land. And he insists there's simply no design that he can't reproduce. His motto, if you can dream it, he can make it.
And no order is too eccentric or bizarre, like this giant phone ordered by a local cell phone employee.
"And it says there you can check your voice mail."
"Ha ha ha..You can check it ha ha ha."
6. Tourists flock to Pa Joe's.
"This is fascinating. I've been to so many countries before but I've never seen anything similar to this. It's very beautiful, very colourful."
7. The average completion time depending, of course, on detail and complexity anywhere from three to six weeks. And they're not cheap either. Prices can set one back anywhere from 800 to 2,000 dollars, a year's wages for most here. Pa Joe says many Ghanaians are dead serious about their mode of departure into the afterlife. And some foreigners can see why.
"I like this fish. I would like to be buried inside one of these. "
8. And while some would consider scenes like this a mockery of religion, Pa Joe sees it differently. He is, you might say, granting a final wish while at the same time continuing a tradition that dates back centuries. Jeff Koinange, CNN, Accra, Ghana.

3. 59세의 조 아저씨는 맞춤용 관을 직접 디자인해 왔으며, 이 관들이 자신의 수작이라 밝힙니다. 닭, 뱀, 고급 승용차 모양에, 심지어는 거대한 맥주병 관에 이르기 까지 그 종류도 다양합니다.

"이 맥주병 관은 어떤 고객에게 적합할까요?"

"두 부류가 있습니다. 술집 주인이거나 애주가가 좋겠습니다."
4. 다른 아프리카 지역처럼, 가나에서도 종교가 국민 일상에 큰 부분을 차지하고 있습니다. 교회나 사원을 다니지 않은 사람들은 무생물을 숭배하고, 자신의 생전 직업을 상징하는 관에 묻히는 풍습이 있습니다. 비행기 관은 조종사, 군 장비는 군인,거대한 운동화는 운동선수를 위해 맞춤 제작됐습니다.
5. 조 아저씨는 자신이 가나 최고의 목공이라고 자부합니다. 어떤 디자인이라도 관으로 제작할 수 있다고 장담하는 조 아저씨의 좌우명은 "내 사전엔 불가능한 관이란 없답"니다. 유별난 고객의 주문도 조 아저씨 손에서는 가능해집니다. 이 거대한 휴대전화 관은 휴대전화 회사를 다니는 직원이 주문한 것으로, 내부에 '음성 메세지를 확인해 주세요'라 쓰였습니다.
6. 해외 관광객도 호기심에 몰려 듭니다.
"정말 멋집니다. 여러 지역을 다녀 봤지만, 이런 곳은 처음입니다. 색체가 화려합니다."
7. 정밀도와 난이도에 따라 차이가 있지만, 평균 제작 기간은 3~6주 정돕니다. 가격도 800~ 2000달러 정도로, 이 지역 주민 연간 수입과 맞먹는 액숩니다. 가나인들은 사후 세계로 떠나는 매개체인 관에 비상한 관심을 갖고 있다고 조 아저씨는 설명합니다. 이 곳을 찾아오는 일부 외국인도 공감하는 모양입니다.
"저도 나중에 이런 물고기 관에 묻히면 좋겠습니다."
8. 대형 담배 모양의 관을 이고 가는 이 같은 장례행렬을 보고, 신성한 제례의식을 욕보인다고 주장하는 사람들도 있겠지만 조 아저씨의 생각은 다릅니다. 자신의 일이 망자의 마지막 소원을 들어 주는 것이자, 오랜 전통을 이어 간다고 믿고 있습니다.
