1.A town in western France is facing a scandal following the arrest of dozens of people accused of participating in a pedophilia ring. The allegations are shocking. Among those accused are some of the parents of the alleged victims. Jim Bittermann has more.

2. A poet once wrote that the people of Angers, France, enjoy a sweet life style. Mild temperatures, gentle light, good wine. But now, this ancient French town of 150,000 is getting a rude wake-up call.
3. It sounds each day as the police vans bring 66 Angers residents to court on trial for multiple counts of pedophilia, the largest criminal trial in French history. So large that a special courtroom has been constructed to try crimes so horrifying that the deputy mayor believes the city's image will be permanently stained by sexual perversion. A case, the local newspaper editor says, that has left people stupefied.

"The first reaction by the president of the regional council was that's not us, that's not Angers, we are not like that."
4. And yet, behind the walls of a new and pleasant public housing estate, ugly crimes have been taking place. According to investigators, over the course of 3 years here, 45 children, ranging at age from 6 months to 16 years old, were repeatedly sexually abused and raped. Sometimes by members of their own family. Sometimes in exchange for payments, such as small amounts of money, food, alcohol, and in one case, a car tire.
5. Those who live around the three family groups who are alleged to be at the center of the pedophilia ring are terrified. 15-year-old Florian Ribas knew his neighbors were poor and unemployed. But he didn't know they were abusing their own children.

"It's left a mark on me. They lived just across the streets. And I said to myself that could have been me."
6. Over at Patrice Martin's bar, there is a fear of a different sort. His customers talk about the case all the time and worry there will now be false accusations of child abuse.
"It's a psychosis" he says. "Just about anyone can be accused. All you have to do is say hello to a child and someone will say hey, you are a pedophile."
7. At the courthouse, those who read through the 25,000 pages of evidence, cannot overestimate the impact this case has had.
"To me, this is a global failure, failure of the social services, failure of the society itself, failure of us all."
8. Said a lawyer, representing 11 of the young victims, that you don't even know you have victims and pedophiles around you. Truly, it's shameful, shameful, shameful.

5. 사건의 주동자로 꼽히는 세 가족이 살고 있던 이 주택 단지 주민들은 충격에 몸서릴 칩니다. 15세 이웃 소년은 그들을 가난한 실직자로만 알았지, 자식을 성학대하는 파렴치한인지는 몰랐다고 합니다.

"바로 맞은 편에 살던 사람들입니다. 그 피해자가 나일 수도 있었겠다는 생각이 듭니다."
6. 이 곳 술집에서는 다른 종류의 우려를 들을 수 있었습니다. 손님들은 이 사건을 얘기하며 자칫 자신도 성학대범으로 몰릴 수 있겠다고 걱정한다고 주인을 말합니다.
"모두 노이로제에 걸려서, 어린 아이에 가까이 가서 인사만 해도 성학대범으로 오인될 수 있는 분위깁니다."
7. 2만5천 여 장의 기소문을 읽은 사람들은 이번 사건의 여파가 실로 엄청나다고 말합니다.
"제가 보기에는 총체적 위깁니다. 사회보장망 뿐 아니라 우리 사회, 그리고 개인의 위깁니다."
