Westminster Confession, Chapter 1, 6.

 

 

The whole purpose of God about everything pertaining to his own glory and to man’s salvation, faith, and life is either explicitly stated in the Bible or may be deduced as inevitably and logically following from it. Nothing is at any time to be added to the Bible, either from new revelations of the Spirit or from traditions of men. Nevertheless we do recognize that the inward illumination of the Spirit of God is necessary for a saving und...erstanding of the things which are revealed in the word. We also recognize that some provisions for the worship of God and the government of the church are similar to secular activities and organizations; these are to be directed according to our natural understanding and our Christian discretion and should conform to the general rules of the word, which are always to be observed.

 

하나님의 영광과 인간의 구원, 믿음, 생명과 관계된 하나님의 모든 계획은 성경에 분명히 진술되었거나, 혹은 그것으로부터 필연적이고, 논리적으로 추론될 수 있다. 성경을 바르게 이해하기 위해서는 성령의 내적인 조명하심이 필수적이라 하더라도 우리는 예배모범이나 교회 정치와 같은 몇몇 제도는 세속적인 활동과 조직에 유사하다는 것을 인정해야 하고, 이러한 것들은 우리의 본성적 통찰과 그리스도인의 분별력에 따라 지도를 받아야 하고, 말씀의 일반적인 규정들을 준수해야 한다.
성경은 분명 하나님의 말씀으로 신적인 것이다. 그러나 이것은 인간의 문자를 통해 성경으로 기록되었다. 하나님이 이처럼 성경을 기록하게 하신 것은 하나님께서 인간에게 허락하신 지력을 통해서 그것을 읽고, 이해할 수 있게 하셨다는 뜻이다. 따라서 성경을 단순히 신성한 것으로 치부하여 어떤 신비적 능력에 의한 해석만을 기대하지 말고, 보다 적극적으로 말씀을 읽고 묵상하며, 합리적 해석을 시도해야 한다.

믿음이란 끊임없이 성경을 읽고 묵상하는 것이다.
