1. We are now back to the case that is grabbing a lot of attention around the world particularly in the United States - the battle over Terri Schiavo. The brain damaged Florida woman is slowly starving to death in a Florida hospice. Her parents want her kept alive, her husband doesn't. And thanks to an extraordinary act of Congress, the federal courts will now decide who prevails. John Zarrela looks at emotionally wrenching case no matter which side you are on.

2. There simply are two very different ways of looking at Terri Schiavo's situation. From one point of view, her fate was decided in 1990 when she collapsed from heart failure, leading to severe brain damage and leaving her body in a persistent vegetative state.

"The thinking part of her brain is simply gone and is replaced with liquid. Terri has not responded in the 15 years that she's been in this condition."
3. But there is another point of view - Terri Schiavo's parents' along with many in Washington and across the country who believe that since her body is still functioning her life is still worth living and worth fighting for.

"I told her that we are gonna take her for a little trip and take her outside and get her some breakfast. That got a big smile out of her face. So help me God."

"The legal and political issues may be complicated but the moral ones are not. A young woman in Florida is being dehydrated and starved to death."
4. This afternoon's legal fireworks wouldn't have been possible without quick action over the weekend by Congress. Lawmakers rushed through a compromise bill allowing Terri Schiavo's parents to literally make a federal case out of their daughter's fate.
Up till now, state courts have consistently ruled against her parents and in favor of her husband who says his wife once told him that in a situation like this she would have wanted to die.

"This is what Terri wanted. This is Terri's wish, okay? It's not President Bush's wish. This is about Terri Schiavo, not the government, not President Bush and Governor Bush. They should be ashamed of themselves."
President Bush who was awakened to sign the new law shortly after one in the morning made his first public comments this afternoon in Arizona.
"This is a complex case with serious issues, but in extraordinary circumstances like it is wise to always err on the side of life."

3. 그러나 테리 시아보의 부모들은 다르게 생각합니다. 또 의원들과 다른 여러 이들 역시 그녀의 신체가 제기능을 하므로, 그녀의 목숨이 연장돼야 한다고 주장합니다.
시아보의 오빠는 그녀의 병이 나으면 함께 여행을 가서 즐거운 시간을 갖자고 시아보에게 말했다며, 도움을 호소합니다.미 하원의 톰 딜레이 원내총무도, 시아보가 죽어가고 있는 현재 상황은 정치적, 법적으론 복잡한 문제이지만, 도덕적으론 명백히 잘못된 상황이라고 주장합니다.
4. 지난 주말 의회는 이 사건이 연방법원에서 다뤄지는 것을 허용하는 특별법을 재빨리 통과시켰으며, 그 결과 현재의 법적 공방이 가능해졌습니다. 지금까지 주 법원은 시아보의 부모가 아닌 그녀의 남편의 손을 들어줬습니다. 그녀의 남편은 시아보가 만약 식물인간이 된다면, 차라리 죽음을 택하겠다고 말한 적이 있다며, 생명을 중지시키는 것이 시아보의 뜻에 따르는 것이라 주장합니다.

한편 부시 대통령은 새벽 1시에 새로운 특별법에 서명했는데, 이번 사건에 대해 아리조나에서 첫 공식적 언급을 했습니다.
