1. This week's rampage in Minnesota was the worst school related shooting since the episode in Colorado in 1999. Tom Foreman looks at the legacy of the Columbine massacre.

2. In the neat suburban neighborhoods and beautiful foothills of Littleton, 6 years after the shooting, Columbine is pretty much just a highschool again. But when school violence strikes anywhere, it echoes here.
"Anything that dramatic that happens puts them back to that day."
3. Frank Deangelis knows it well. He was and is principal at Columbine.

"The first few years, anytime I would hear a balloon pop I would fall on the ground, because when I walked out of my office six years ago and I saw the gunman firing shots past me."
4. Over the course of four hours on an April morning in 1999, Columbine became the measuring stick for school violence. The day was the culmination of a brazen plot by two teenage boys to destroy the school, and slaughter hundreds of people.
5. The gunmen failed miserably, but killed twelve students, a teacher and themselves. And the images of the killers at work, the details of their murderous plan, the heartbreaking memorials changed the national perception of what school violence can be.
"You know the fire alarm system……. I still get chills up and down my spine when that alarm goes off because it draws me back to that morning in which we were locked and stuck in that building."
The legacy of Columbine certainly reached far beyond Colorado...
6. In the months immediately afterward, schools everywhere reviewed safety plans, counseling programs, installed video cameras, metal detectors, all possibly useful. But Jill Cook with the American School Counselor Association says perhaps something else is not getting enough attention…….

"You can have a plan, a school crisis plan on paper, you can have technology in place in the school to deter violence, but when it comes right down to it, what matters is relationships."
"Between counselors and students, administrators and teachers, teachers and students……."
"Absolutely."
7. She suggests only one-on-one relationships can reveal which students are reveling in web sites like these, which glorify the Columbine shooters, laugh at the suffering of their victims.
8. Maybe many of us do not take all of this too seriously these days, because we still think things like school shootings happen somewhere else. I know better. I lived only a few miles from Columbine Highschool and even as I stood outside reporting on the killings that day, I knew people inside and so many people in Littleton did
9. They know the memories will never completely leave them…….
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Red Lake……."
But they also know there is healing and there are lessons that follow.

3. 당시 콜럼바인 고교의 교장이었고 현직 교장이기도 한 프랭크 디안젤리스는 그날의 참상을 생생히 기억합니다.

"사건 후 몇년 동안은 풍선 터지는 소리만 들어도 땅에 엎드렸습니다. 6년 전 학교에서 제 옆으로 총알이 난사됐던 기억이 생생해서였습니다."
4. 1999년 4월 네 시간동안 일어난 콜럼바인 총기 난사사건은 학교 폭력이 어느 지경에 이르렀는지 분명히 보여줬습니다. 두 명의 학생은 학교를 파괴하고 수백명을 살해한다는 끔찍한 계획을 실행해 옮긴 것입니다.
5. 이들은 12명의 학생과 교사를 살해한 후 자신의 목숨도 끊었습니다. 범인들의 총격 연습 장면과 이들의 세밀한 살인 계획이 알려지고, 가슴 아픈 애도 행사가 있은 뒤, 학교 폭력은 전과 다른 의미를 갖게 됐습니다. 디안젤리스 교장은 아직도 화재 경보기가 울리면 6년 전 그날이 생각나 등골이 서늘해 진다고 말합니다. 콜럼바인 총기 난사사건은 전국 학교들에 영향을 미쳤습니다.
6.학교들은 안전 대책과 상담 프로그램의 재정비와 CCTV와 금속 탐지기의 설치 등 모든 조치를 강구했습니다. 그러나 학생 상담 위원회의 질 쿡씨는 중요한 문제가 간과되고 있다고 지적합니다.

"학교 폭력을 방지하기 위해 위기 상황에 대한 대응 지침을 만들거나, 기술의 도움을 받을 수도 있습니다. 그러나 본질적으로 가장 중요한 것은 상담자와 학생,혹은 교사와 학생 사이의 관계입니다."
7. 질 쿡씨는 학생과의 일대일 대화를 해야 콜럼바인 총기 난사범을 미화하고, 희생자를 조롱하는 웹사이트를 누가 만들고 있는지 밝힐 수 있다고 말합니다.
8. 많은 이들은 자신의 지역 사회에선 콜럼바인 고교와 같은 총기 난사사건이 일어나지 않을 것이라 생각합니다. 그러나 사건이 일어난 곳은 저희 집 인근이었습니다. 당시 저는 사건 취재를 했는데, 학교에 감금된 사람들 중엔 제가 아는 사람도 있었습니다. 그날의 기억을 영원히 떨치지 못하는 리틀톤의 주민들은 이번 총기 난사사건이 발생한 레드 레이크 주민들을 위로하는 기도를 합니다.
9. 이들의 상처는 치유되고 앞으로 많은 교훈이 남을 것입니다.
