1. Well, U.S. forces in Iraq and Afghanistan are already getting a helping hand from some robotic assistance. The Pentagon is taking a hard look at what mechanical soldiers can do now and what they may be able to do in the future. Our senior Pentagon corrspondent, Jamie Mcintyre has more.

2. This explosion 2 months ago in Iraq is a result of U.S. soldiers employing the latest in robot technology. Using a small radio controlled vehicle called the PackBot to detonate the roadside bomb. The PackBot was developed by Irobot, a cutting-edge company outside Boston co-founded by Hellen Greiner, an MIT engineer, who saw her future in Star Wars.

“When I was 11, I went to see Star Wars with my parents, and I was just…that I was really inspired by R2D2. R2D2 wasn’t just a machine, you know. He had a personality. He had a gender.”
3. While the versatile PackBot can’t think for itself, it can do reconnaisance, disarm bombs and search caves. And it works so well in Iraq and Afghanistan the Pentagon just put in an 18 million dollar order for 150 more.
There will be a long time before robots ever replace humans. But what they are perfect for, is dirty, dull, or dangerous jobs. The next challenge for robot designers, deadly urban combat. So future urban assaults like the seige of Fallujah may be done with the aid of swarms of small robots.
Just like tiny mechanical spiders search for Tom Cruise in the movie ‘Minority Report’, these rudimentary machines in development by Irobot use the same swarm principle. They talk to each other, so one operator can control hundreds at a time.

“But over time we’re gonna see robots that can take a mission, go out and excute it, navigate themselves, see, communicate back, gather information, come back and deliver that information in a humanlike function.”
4. Joe Dyer is a retired navy admiral and F-18 pilot, who now works for Irobot. He predicts the world of robots envisioned by sci-fi genius Issac Asmov and depicted in the movie ‘i-Robot’ is maybe 25 years away. “I-Robot, the movie, we think, had it about right. We are started to see full of androids that you might wanna go out and have a beer with.”
5. And while, Dyer says, humans will remain in the loop for a long time at Irobot they do treat their robots sort of like people. On the lobby hangs a memorial to a PackBot who died in the line of duty. Jamie Mcintyre, CNN, Boston. | [앵커멘트]

"11살 때 부모님과 스타워즈를 봤을 때, 로봇인 R2-D2가 계속 기억에 남았습니다. R2-D2는 생각과 감정을 가진 로봇입니다."
3. 팩봇은 혼자 생각하진 못하지만, 정찰과 폭탄 해체, 수색작업을 할 수 있습니다. 팩봇은 이라크와 아프가니스탄에서 눈부신 활약상을 보여, 국방부는 천팔백만 달러를 들여 150대를 더 주문했습니다.
로봇이 인간을 대신할 날은 아직 멀었으나 지저분하고, 단조롭고, 위험한 일에는 로봇이 최적격입니다. 로봇 디자이너들이 앞으로 도시 전투용 로봇을 개발하게 된다면, 팔루자 공격과 같은 내전에선 여러 무리의 작은 로봇들이 큰 역할을 할 수 있습니다.
영화 마이너리티 리포트에서 톰 크루즈를 쫓던 거미 로봇들처럼 이 로봇들도 무리지어 움직입니다. 아이로봇사가 개발중인 이 로봇들은 서로 커뮤니케이션이 가능하여, 한 번에 수백대가 조종될 수 있습니다.

"앞으로 로봇들은 인간처럼 임무를 받아 직접 수행하고, 상황에 맞는 커뮤니케이션을 실시하며, 정보를 수집해 전달할 수 있을 것입니다."
4. 전직 해군 장군이며 F18기의 조종사였던 조 다이어씨는 현재 아이로봇에서 일하고 있습니다. 그는 앞으로 25년 후면 SF 소설의 거장 아이작 아시모프가 예견했고, 영화 'i-Robot'에 그려진 세계가 도래할 것이라 전망합니다. 그는 이 영화가 로봇이 일상생활의 일부가 되는 미래상을 정확히 포착했다고 말합니다.
5. 앞으로도 오랫동안 로봇은 인간의 조정을 받겠지만, 아이로봇사에선 로봇이 인간처럼 취급되기도 합니다. 로비에는 임무 수행 중 전사한 팩봇을 추모하는 액자가 걸려있습니다. |
