1. Well, have you ever been stuck in a traffic jam and wished you could just fly over the congestion? I guess I have. And a British company is working on a plan to do just exactly that. Paula Hancocks pilots the story.

2. It’s a familiar sight, the choked roads of a major city. Give it 5 or 6 years, and this could be just as common place. The Jetpod is an airborne taxi that’s quiet and environmentally friendly. In aeronautical jargon this is a VQ-STOL aircraft. To you and me that’s a very quiet, short take-off and landing aircraft.
3. It stparks comparisons with Bruce Willis’s taxi in the film the Fifth Element, but the Jetpod had a chance of becoming a reality 200 years ahead of its movies equivalent.
“This aircraft can take off within 125 meters because a portion of an engine thrust is reflected downwards. This creates an additional force pointing up, so that’s that the total upward force exceeds the weight of the aircraft and the aircraft can take off.”
4. The inventor estimates that test flight could take place in less than a year and a half, with final certification by 2010. It has the seal of approval from London commuters.
“Definitely yeah. Really fantastic. Can I have one?”
5. The plane is expected to carry up to 7 passengers with estimate that the pod could be profitable charging just 18 dollars per person.
“We will be looking at about, say, 50 aircrafts to service a city the size of London. For 50 sectors a day so that would take, in our calculation, about 37,000 cars off the road.
If true, it could play a role in reducing country’s CO2 emission.
6. As the runway only needs to be 125 meters long the inventors believe the options in a city center are endless. They suggest building an elevated platform on the river, or building an elevated platform over the approach to a railway station. They even say simply building a runway above a congested road is plausible. The future of a quiet daily commute with city landmarks at your feet could be only 5 years away. 2. 대도시의 꽉 막힌 도로, 익숙한 풍경입니다. 그러나 앞으로 5, 6년 후엔 이렇게 변할 지 모릅니다. 하늘을 나는 택시, 제트포드는 소음도 없고 친환경적입니다. 전문용어로 VQ-STOL로 불리는 이 항공기는 조용한데다 이착륙시간이 짧습니다.
3. 영화 <제 5원소>에 나온 택시와는 여러 모로 비교되지만, 영화에서보다 200백년 앞서 현실화될 잠재력을 보이고 있습니다.
"125미터만 확보되도 이륙이 가능한 이유는 엔진 추진력의 일부가 아래로 향하기 때문입니다. 그것은 또한 위로 향하는 힘을 더해 힘의 총합이 항공기 무게를 넘어 이륙이 가능한 것입니다."
4. 개발사는 1년 반 안에 시험비행이 가능하고 2010년경에는 최종 사업승인이 나올 것으로 예상합니다. 런던 시민들은 대환영하고 있습니다.
"훌륭한데요, 하나 가질 수 있나요?"
5. 제트포드는 최대 일곱 명까지 수용할 수 있으며 일인당 18달러만 받아도 수익성이 있다는 게 업계의 전망입니다.
"런던같은 규모의 도시에서 50대만 운영하면 자동차 3만 7천대의 교통량 감소 효과를 볼 수 있습니다."
사실이라면 이산화탄소 배출량도 크게 줄일 수 있습니다
6. 활주로가 125미터 밖에 필요하지 않아 도심 활용방안은 무궁무진합니다. 강 위나 철도역 주변, 아니면 아예 정체 도로 위쪽에 활주로를 건설하는 것도 가능한 대안입니다. 도시를 발 아래로 굽어보며 조용하게 통근할 날이 이제 5년안에 가능할 지 모릅니다. |
