1. After just two days in Conclave, the College of Cardinals has elected the 265th leader of the Roman Catholic Church. Caridnal Joseph Ratzinger emerged on the balcony overlooking St. Peters Square as Pope Benedict XVI. His election heralds the beginning of a new chapter in the church’s history. Diana Muriel reports on what he brings to the papacy.

2. A billow of smoke atop the Sistine Chapel surprised those waiting in St. Peters Square. For the crowd that cheered, it was clear a new pope had been elected in less than 24 hours. Then it came, the ringing of the bells. The second sign that the 115-cardinal Conclave had reached a decision.
3. All eyes turned to the balcony. “Habemum Papam”, we have a pope. Chilian Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez, the senior Cardinal Deacon appeared. His holy name, Benedict XVI. Born in Germany, Ratzinger is 78 years old. He was the dean of the cardinals, and was named by Pope John Paul II to oversee the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. He also served, for 20 years, as John Paul II’s chief theological adviser.
4. In matters of doctrine, he is known for his tough “no” statements. No to ordained women, no to the wedding of priests, no to homosexuality, no to communism, no to rock music. Personally he is regarded as humble and charming, a conservative intellectual.
5. And as such, he is expected to continue in the tradition of his predecessor, Pope John Paul II. But for now, the crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square their thoughts are not with the future, but simply with the present, savoring this moment of history. Diana Muriel, CNN, Vatican City.
6. Messages of good will and congratulations have been flooding in to the Vatican since the election of the new pontiff. President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa said "Pope Benedict XVI assumes leadership at a critical time in which the world's collective wisdom and leadership is most important to face up to the challenges of deepening poverty and underdevelopment."
7. Germany's Gerhard Schroeder pays tributes to the new Roman Catholic leader, saying "in Pope Benedict XVI, a pope has been chosen who knows the world church like no one else. Pope Benedict is a worthy successor to Pope John Paul II."
