1. Now let's take it to Richmont, Virginia in the United States where a woman ravaged by cancer and diagnosed as brain-dead has givin birth to a baby girl.
An astounding story. Susan Torres's delivery went smoothly and the baby's said to be doing well in the hospital's Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit. Medical correspondant Elizabeth Cohen has more on the mother and the family she left behind.

2. It was a bittersweet day for Jason Torres. His wife Susan gave birth to their second child, Susan Anne Catherine Torres. A team of doctors worked round the clock for months to save the child long after they knew they could not save her mother.
3. Susan and Jason Torres, both 26, were college sweethearts. They got married and had a son, Peter now three. She was pregnant with their second child and living her dream, doing vaccine research at National Institutes Of Health.

"It was a wonderful partnership, becasue susan was tough and focused and jason was fun loving and sort of easy going."
4. When Susan was 17, a small spot on her shoulder was diagnosed as melanoma. Doctors removed it and she remained cancer free. Then a couple of months ago...
"She had started to have headaches and dizziness and nausea and symptoms like that that got sort of progressively worse."
On May 7th, Torres had a stroke that left her brain dead.

"the melanoma metastasize, went to the brain and caused a bleed in the brain which then the pressure just built up and built up."
5. But she was put on a venilator to keep her lungs going as doctors tried to save the baby and allow it to develop. It was a race against time. They had to wait 12 weeks to let the baby develop but during that time there was a risk of the cancer spreading to the placenta. Doctors say it's usual, but it does happen.

"there are only about 21 or so cases of that reported, of melanoma going to the placenta and only about 5 cases reported of the fetus actually having melanoma."
6. Even so, experts say the baby, who is 12 weeks early and weighs just 1 pound and 13 ounces, is not out of the woods just yet.

"Potentially up to 1 to 2 years we need to look at to make sure that there is no disease that has spread to the baby."
7. And while today is a day of mixed emotions, Justin says he will have a message for his neice.

"You have no idea how hard some people fought for you and you have no idea how important you are to us."

2. 제이슨 토레스 씨에겐 만감이 교차하는 날입니다. 뇌사 상태에 빠져 병원에서도 가망이 없다고 포기한 아내 수잔이 여러 달 동안 밤잠도 잊고 땀흘린 의료진 덕분에 둘째 아이, 수잔 앤 캐더린 토레스를 무사히 분만했기 때문입니다.
3. 수잔과 제이슨 토레스는 26살 동갑으로 대학 캠퍼스 커플이었습니다. 이들은 결혼을 해 지금 세살인 아다르 피터를 낳았습니다. 수잔은 둘째 아이를 임신하고 미 국립 보건원에서 백신 연구를 하고 싶다던 꿈도 성취했습니다.

"잘 어울리는 부부였죠. 수잔은 참을성과 집중력이 강했고 제이슨은 명랑하고 느긋한 성격이었습니다."
4. 수잔은 17살에 어깨에 흑색종이 발견됐습니다. 제거 수술을 받은 이후 건강한 생활을 했지만 몇 달 전부터 이상 징후가 나타났습니다.
"두통과 어지럼증, 그리고 구토증세가 나타났는데 점 점 더 증세가 악화됐습니다."
지난 5월 7일, 토레스는 뇌졸중을 일으켜 왼쪽 뇌가 뇌사상태에 빠져 버렸습니다.

"흑생종이 뇌로 전이해 뇌출혈이 발생했고 그 압력이 계속 커졌던 겁니다."
5. 아기를 살리기 위해선 수잔이 계속 숨을 쉬어야 했기 때문에 의료진은 수잔에게 인공 호흡기를 댔습니다. 이건 시간과의 싸움이었습니다. 아기가 어느 정도 자라기 위해선 뱃속에서 12주를 더 버텨야 했지만 그러다 암세포가 태반까지 퍼질 수도 있었던 겁니다. 확률이 높진 않지만 어쨌든 위험은 존재했다고 의료진은 말했습니다

"흑색종이 태반에까지 옮겨간 경우는 보고된 사례가 겨우 21건 정도이고 이 중 태아에게까지 흑생종이 퍼진 경우는 단 5건이었습니다."
6. 아기는 예정일보다 12 주 앞서 출산됐고 체중은 겨우 820 그램입니다. 전문가들은 아직 안심할 수 없다고 말합니다.

"앞으로 1, 2년 정도는 아기에게 아무 이상이 없는지 잘 지켜봐야 합니다."
