1. Sharp rise in oil prices has some people looking for alternative sources of energy. Kimberly Osias tells us about a man who completed a coast-to-coast journey across the United States in a car that was powered solely by ethanol.

2. Chris Lapp is on the road in an old car with a made-in-the USA fuel, ethanol.

"The car represents what America used to be and with the fuel I was putting into it was going to represent what America is going to be. So I thought it was a kinda a back-to-the-future thing."
3. His 1957 Eldorado Biarritz is a classic. It's even older than he is. Lapp rebuilt the Caddy's engine.
"It looks good."
Altering the carborator and the fuel line. His new souped-up ride ferried him coast to coast. 16 states in all, Lapp logged 7 thousand miles in two and a half weeks.
4. But the road wasn't always smooth. The biggest bump: finding gas stations that sold the alternative fuel. The Midwest, he said, had the most. No surprise, since in the US ethanol comes primarily from crops like corn.
"So I think perhaps we are gonna end up with an energy situation in the future with red and blue energy states."
5. Lapp had to plan pit stops well ahead.
"(I) gotta shop here more often."
With his antiquated vehicle getting only 15 miles per gallon.
"$2.24.9 a gallon. It's a lot cheaper than the gas I've been buying for my car."
6. Fuel efficiency wasn't the primary purpose.
"I did this for awareness of the energy mix that America has to have in the future."
7. Lapp did conserve some cash though.
"I probably saved several hundred dollars relative to gasoline."
And got one memorable ride.

"내가 모는 차가 과거를 대변한다면 내가 쓰는 연료는 미래를 예고합니다. 일종의 "백투더퓨쳐'라고 할 수 있죠."
3. 그가 모는 1957년형 엘도라도 비아리츠는 주인보다도 나이가 많습니다. 엔진과 카브레이터, 연료선을 교체하고, 대륙 횡단에 나섰습니다. 16개 주를 가로지는 대장정입니다. 2주 반만에 7천 마일을 달렸습니다.
4. 횡단이 항상 순조로웠던 것은 아닙니다. 가장 큰 문제는 대체 연료를 파는 주유소를 찾는 것이었습니다. 그도그럴 것이 에탄올이 옥수수에서 추출되기 때문에 중서부 지역에 집중돼있기 때문입니다.
"앞으로는 에너지 잉여지역과 고갈지역으로 미국의 주가 나뉠 상황까지 오게 될 걸로 생각합니다."
5. 미리 미리 급유를 해두어야했습니다.
차량이 낡아 갤론당 15마일 밖에 못달립니다.
"그래도 석유보다 훨씬 싼, 갤론당 2.25달러 밖에 안합니다."
6. 연비절약이 횡단여행의 목적은 아닙니다.
"에너지 혼합 사용에 대한 인식을 고취시키기 위한 겁니다."
7. 그래도 돈이 절약됩니다.
"가솔린에 비해 한 수백 달러 정도 절약했을 겁니다."
덤으로 잊을 수 없는 여행의 추억까지 챙겼습니다. |
