1. The London bombing sparked a wave of attacks, physical and verbal against Muslims in Britain. At the same time, authorities, cracking down on extremists, have put the Muslim community under pressure. More now from Chris Burns.

Did this happen at night, when they were doing this?
"This happened, yeah, around 2 o'clock in the morning."
3. Azad Ali is spokesman for a Muslim Crime-Watch group. No one hurt this time, but it was part of a hate wave of attacks against Britain's Muslim community after the July 7th bombings. London police say the rest of July since the bombings, faith-based hate crimes were up 600% against Muslims as well as other religions.
"We've had Islamophobic murder in Nottingham where a man was murdered, you know. He was disparaged Islamically."
4. Ali's group, the Muslim Safety Forum, accuses police of not taking the crime wave seriously.
"Institutionally, they've been in denial about these attacks, the veracity of them and the impact that they have on the community."
5. London police declined to be interviewed, but in earlier comments, recognized the need to reach out.

"Clearly we have to concentrate on reassurance to the Muslim communities."
6. Ali contends police have often been too tough on Muslims in searching out terror suspects. Nearby plain-clothes police shake down a car of olive-skinned men. Ali opposes racial profiling, though the London Transit Police Chief says they're not going to waste their time searching "little old white ladies."
"There's no intelligence about that. It's criminalizing the entire community."
7. That in turn, Ali says, complicates efforts to get the Muslim community to cooperate in tracking down extremists. The police's accidental killing of a Brazilian erroneously suspected of being a terrorist has made matters worse, he says.
"The shoot-to-kill policy, that's had a big impact, you know."

"It basically said that we're gonna kill Muslims."
8. Police say the hate wave, mostly nonviolent crimes, has receded and that they've taken measures to safeguard against another mistaken killing. They're also asking for help.
"What, I think, we see is the most important outcome, and it comes to the profiling issue in some way, is the development of some form of national community security organization for the Muslim communities. Because this comes back to the fact that it's not the police and security services that will defeat terrorism, it's communities that will defeat terrorism. "

3. 아자드 알리 씨는 무슬림 범죄 감시 단체의 대변인입니다. 이번엔 아무도 다치지 않았지만 7.7 런던 테러 이후 이슬람 신도가 습격 당하는 사건이 부쩍 늘고 있습니다. 런던 경찰은 7.7 테러 이후 이슬람을 포함해 특정 종교를 겨냥한 증오 범죄가 600%나 증가했다고 밝혔습니다.

"노팅엄에선 이슬람 교인이 살해당한 사건도 있었습니다."
4. 알리 씨가 이끄는 단체, 무슬림 안전 포럼은 최근 들어 이슬람 신도를 겨냥한 증오 범죄가 급증하고 있는데도 경찰이 이에 적극 대처하지 않고 있다고 비난했습니다.
"최근 증오 범죄가 급증하고 이로 인해 이슬람 교인들이 불안에 떨고 있는데도 경찰은 무신경한 태도로 일관하고 있습니다."
5. 런던 경찰은 인터뷰를 거절했지만 일전의 논평에서 이슬람 신도들을 포용할 필요성을 인정한 바 있습니다.

"이슬람 신도들이 불안에 떨지 않도록 노력할 필요가 있습니다."
6. 알리 씨는 경찰이 테러 용의자를 추적하는 과정에서 이슬람 신도들을 지나칠 정도로 강압적으로 대하고 있다고 지적했습니다. 여기서도 사복 경찰이 피부가 가무잡잡한 남자들의 차를 샅샅이 수색하고 있습니다. 알리 씨는 특정 피부색을 가진 사람만 불심 검문하는 건 옳지 않다고 말하지만 런던 경찰은 그렇다고 백인 노인을 검문하느라 시간 낭비할 생각은 없다고 반박합니다.
"이건 이슬람 신도 전체를 범죄자로 취급하는 겁니다."
7. 이렇게 되면 테러 단속에 필요한 이슬람 신도들의 협조를 얻기 힘들어질 수 있으며, 브라질 청년이 테러범으로 오인돼 사살된 사건은 상황을 더 악화시켰다고 알리 씨는 지적했습니다.
"용의자가 저항하면 사살하겠다는 경찰의 방침은 이슬람 신도들을 죽이겠다는 소리로 밖에 들리지 않았습니다."
8. 그러나 경찰은 한때 급증했던 증오 범죄가 다시 감소 추세이며 그나마도 대부분은 폭력이 동반되지 않은 범죄들이었다고 주장했고, 오인 사살을 막기 위한 조치도 이미 취했다고 말했습니다. 그리고 도움을 요청했습니다.
"이슬람 신도들이 주축이 되는 지역 공동체 보안 기구가 마련될 필요성이 있다고 봅니다. 왜냐하면 궁극적으로 테러리즘을 퇴치할 수 있는 건 경찰이 아니라 바로 지역 공동체이기 때문입니다."
테러 재발을 막아야 하는 경찰로서는 테러 공격을 막는 데 가장 큰 도움을 줄 수 있는 이슬람 신도들과의 관계를 손상시켜선 안될 겁니다. |
