1. Well, for many families the time has done little to ease the agony of the Beslan school massacre. A year after the seize a group of still angry mothers are set to meet face to face with Russia's president. They are demanding more people be held responsible for the death of the 331 people who died that day. Julian Manyon takes a look back.

2. The road from airport to Beslan goes by the cemetery. This week wreathes are filed higher around it as the small town remembers the 3 days that changed it for ever. For me it's a return to a place that has been and will always be impossible to forget.
3. A year ago amid the sounds of gun fire we ran into the school to try to find out what had happened. The answer was unimaginable horror.
4. It had begun on a day dear to Russian hearts when children celebrated the start of the school year. These pictures were taken 2 years before the attack. Last year children, parents and teachers were seized by a group of fanatical terrorists from war-torn Chechnya and herded into the school gymnasium.
5. Explosives were hung from the ceiling. Next to a small a terrorist stood on a pedal which if released would set off the bombs. There was no food, and after the first day, no water. Asked why they were doing it, one Chechen replied, "Our children have been killed. What does it matter if yours die too."
6. Around the school Russian troops began to amass. On the third day the carnage began. There were explosions, gunfire. And suddenly hundreds of children, many of them wounded, streamed into the streets. It's still not clear what started the fighting. But negotiations had never really begun.
7. As Russian troops tried to storm the building we headed for the school. Near the burnt-out gymnasium we had hells and heroism as emergency teams tried to work under fire and a soldier was hit beside us.
8. For almost an hour we took shelter behind this corner as the fighting went on. At one point we managed to get up to the doorway of the gymnasium and for just a few minutes our cameraman Caschul managed to get inside. From that moment we knew that many of the children had died. What we didn't yet understand was the sheer scale of the disaster and the terrible permanent damage that it would inflict on Beslan.
9. Today the ruined gymnasium has become a shrine to the people who perished here. Among the survivors some suffered terrible wounds. Victoria Gusanova's body is still riddled with shrapnel which cannot be removed. And there are fears for the mental health of the children who got out alive. Painting classes are used as therapy. But the images of horror and death.
10. These pictures of 6 year old Diana just moment after she fled the school touched hearts around the world. Today she plays with her friends but erasing the memory will be impossible. Her best friend's mother died in the school. Diana told me that she feels o.k. But her mother says that she is nervous and afraid of people.
11. Alana Alikburg was 16 when the attack took place. She managed to run away when the terrorists appeared but her mother, a teacher was taken hostage and died in the gymnasium.
"I think that if people in the world didn't help us we couldn't live with our grief alone."
12. A year on it's difficult to understand, let alone explain what happened here. The only thing that make sense to me is that something dark and terrible came out of the ruins of Chechnya. It's likely when the terrorists came here they didn't really expect to negotiate a peaceful ending, instead they came to die and, above all to kill. 1. 베슬란 학교 인질 사태 이후 벌써 1년이 지났지만 유가족들의 고통은 조금도 줄어들지 않았습니다. 가슴에 맺힌 멍울이 아직까지도 풀어지지 않은 희생자 유가족들은 푸틴 러시아 대통령과의 면담을 앞두고 그날 숨진 331명의 목숨에 대해 좀 더 많은 책임자가 처벌돼야 한다고 요구하고 있습니다. 베슬란 학교 인질 사태를 되돌아봤습니다.

2. 공항에서 베슬란으로 향하는 도로는 공동 묘지를 지납니다. 그리고 지금 공동 묘지는 화환으로 가득 차 있습니다. 베슬란 주민들은 1년 전 이 작은 도시의 운명을 영원히 바꿔놓은 사흘 간의 악몽을 되새기고 있습니다. 취재 기자에게도 베슬란은 지금까지 잊을 수 없었고 앞으로도 결코 잊을 수 없는 도시입니다.
3. 1년 전 총성이 울려퍼지는 가운데, 취재진은 무슨 일이 벌어지고 있는 지 알아내기 위해 학교 안에 뛰어들었습니다. 그 곳에선 우린 상상조차 못했던 지옥을 발견했습니다.
4. 사건은 러시아인들이 소중한 추억으로 간직하는 학교 개학식 날 발생했습니다. 지금 화면에 보이는 영상은 사건 발생 2년 전에 촬영된 겁니다. 지난해 이 학교의 학생, 학부모, 교사들이 전쟁으로 갈갈이 찢긴 체첸에서 찾아온 광신적인 테러범들에 인질로 잡혀 학교 체육관에 갇혔습니다.
5. 천장엔 폭탄이 설치됐고, 이 아이 바로 옆에 선 테러범은 발을 떼면 바로 폭발을 일으키는 페달을 밟고 있었습니다. 식량은 전혀 없었고 첫날 이후엔 마실 물도 없었습니다. 왜 이런 짓을 하냐는 질문에 한 테러범은 체첸의 아이들도 살해당했는데 당신네 아이들이 죽는 게 대수냐고 반문했습니다.
6. 몇 시간 뒤 학교 앞엔 러시아 군이 집결하기 시작했고 사흘 째 되는 날 대학살이 벌어졌습니다. 폭발음과 총성이 들리더니 갑자기 수백명의 아이들이 거리로 쏟아져 나왔습니다. 총격전이 왜 시작됐는지는 아직까지도 불분명하지만 실질적으로 인질 석방 협상이 벌어졌던 적은 단 한번도 없었습니다.
7. 러시아군이 학교 건물로 돌진하는 동안, 취재진도 학교로 향했습니다. 불에 타버린 체육관 앞에서 취재진은 총알이 날아다니는 엄청난 대혼란 속에서도 용감하게 부상자들을 치료하고 있는 응급 처치 요원들을 만났습니다.
8. 취재진은 전투가 벌어지는 동안 거의 한 시간이나 이 건물 뒤에 몸을 숨기고 있었습니다. 그러다 체육관 문 앞까지 접근하는 데 성공했고, 단 몇 분이었지만 카메라맨이 체육관 내부를 촬영할 수 있었습니다. 그리고 바로 그 순간 많은 어린이가 숨진 사실을 발견했습니다. 하지만 그 때만해도 이 재난의 엄청난 규모와 이 사건이 베슬란에 입힐 영원히 아물지 못할 상처를 미처 인지하지 못한 상태였습니다.
9. 오늘날 폐허가 된 체육관은 이곳에서 숨진 영혼을 모시는 사당이 됐습니다. 생존자 중 일부는 끔찍한 상처를 입었습니다. 빅토리아의 몸은 아직도 빼내지 못한 파편들 투성입니다. 체육관을 살아서 빠져 나왔지만 정신 건강이 우려되는 아이들도 많습니다. 미술 시간이 치료제 역할을 하지만 아이들의 그림은 온통 끔찍한 죽음으로 가득 차 있습니다.
10. 학교에서 빠져 나온 직후 촬영된 이 화면 속의 여자 아이, 다이애나의 모습은 전세계 시청자들의 마음을 아프게 했습니다. 다이애나는 지금 이렇게 친구들과 놀고 있지만 그날의 기억은 영원히 지울 수 없을 겁니다. 그날 가장 친한 친구의 어머니가 학교에서 목숨을 잃었습니다. 다이애나 자신은 괜찮다고 말하지만 아이의 엄마는 다이애나가 늘 불안해 하고 사람을 무서워한다고 전했습니다.
11. 알라나는 사건 당시 열 여섯 살이었고 테러범들이 나타났을 때 운 좋게 도망쳐 나왔습니다. 하지만 교사였던 알라나의 모친은 인질로 잡혀 체육관 안에서 목숨을 잃었습니다.
"세계의 도움이 없었다면 우리 혼자 힘만으론 그날의 슬픔을 견딜 수 없었을 겁니다."
12. 1년이 지난 지금도 그날의 사건은 설명은커녕 이해하기 조차 힘이 듭니다. 우리가 아는 건 체첸의 폐허 더미 속에서 어둡고 끔찍한 무언가가 등장했다는 겁니다. 베슬란에 들이닥친 체첸 테러범들은 인질극의 평화적 종결을 전혀 기대하지 않았던 거 같습니다. 이들은 스스로 죽기 위해 그리고 무엇보다도 남을 죽이기 위해 이곳에 왔던 겁니다. 광란의 복수극에 베슬란의 무고한 어린 생명이 희생됐던 겁니다. |
