1. Amid the growing misery Miles O’brien managed to find one story with a happy ending. On Wednesday he interviewed a woman who had lost her husband. Today we’ve got an update, he’s been found.

2. Telling the damage and counting blessings Ashley and Jason Marcuson are back together again even if their home is in pieces. The winds and water of Katrina destroyed their mobile home. But they know their loss could have been much worse. On Wednesday morning Ashley told CNN her husband had been missing since the storm.

“I have children. They cried to me at night time that they want their daddy. And I promised them, promised them that their daddy would come home and I don’t want to break it to my kids. I don’t want to.”
3. Ashley had left with the kids, Jason stayed behind, but he waited too long.

“I got stuck in. And until I’d seen the water rise up and that’s when I left. Because I didn’t wanna get trapped in the trailer. By time I got out of here it was waist deep and I walked out to there and it was up to my neck.”
4. Flailing amid fallen trees, downed wires and rising water he found shelter in a nearby building.
“As soon as day broke I was on bicycle until night time to have found my family.”
Dazed and disoriented by the debris-strewn landscape Jason lost his way back to his mother-in-law’s home.
5. “And I was worried. You know you couldn’t think. And I was doing the best I could. I couldn’t find it. So I just, I just kept trying until I did find it. And I did find it.”
“At scene of him I just started crying. He started crying, you know. The kids came running up and it just…I was so relieved.”
6. Now Ashley says the loss of their home seems like it hardly matters.

2. 애슐리와 제이슨 부부는 산산이 부서진 집을 보면서도, 안도의 한숨을 내쉽니다. 카트리나의 돌풍과 폭우는 이들의 집에 사정없이 몰아 쳤습니다. 하지만 이들 부부는 집의 파손보다 더 끔찍한 고통을 겪을 뻔했습니다. 수요일 오전, 애슐리는 기자와의 인터뷰에서, 남편을 찾을 수 없다며 흐느꼈습니다. 아이들이 매일 밤 아빠를 찾을 때마다, 아빠가 꼭 돌아올 것이라고 말했는데, 아이들에게 상처를 주고 싶지 않다며 그는 눈물을 흘렸습니다.
3. 제이슨을 제외한 애슐리와 아이들은 카트리나를 피해 집을 떠났습니다.

"집에 있다가, 물이 차오르는 것을 보고 어서 피해야 겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 밖으로 나와 보니 물이 허리까지 차 올랐습니다. 더 걸어가보니, 목까지 물에 잠겼습니다."
4, 차오르는 물 속에서 각종 잔해와 사투를 벌이던 제이슨은 간신히 옆 건물로 몸을 피했습니다.
"날이 밝자, 저녁까지 자전거를 타고 가족을 찾아 헤맸습니다."
그러나 거리 곳곳이 건물 잔해에 뒤덮여, 그는 가족이 있는 곳을 제대로 찾을 수 없었습니다.
"당시엔 정신이 멍한 상태였습니다. 사력을 다했지만, 가족을 찾을 수 없었습니다. 하지만 포기하지 않아서, 결국은 만날 수 있었습니다"
"남편을 드디어 만났을 때, 저희 둘 모두 울고 말았습니다. 아이들도 아빠에게 달려왔고, 상당히 안심이 됐습니다."
6. 애슐리에겐 집이 부서진 것은 큰 문제가 아닙니다.
"아이들에게 '아빠가 집에 오셨다'라고 말할 수 있어 그저 기쁠 뿐입니다." |
