1. Well, you may not have heard of ‘facebook’ yet, but millions of college students can’t get enough of it. It’s like an interactive yearbook for students across the United States. And with the backing of Silicon Valley venture capital firm its founders are hoping that facebook will be the next Internet sensation. As Kathleen Hays reports facebook has even become a verb as in ‘hey, why don’t you facebook me’.

3. Never heard of facebook? Not surprising, if you are over the age of 25. The facebook is an online social network designed exclusively for college students. It’s free of charge and to join all you need is .(dot) edu email address, something only students or recent college grats have.
4. People who join say it can be addictive. Using it for everything from organizing study groups with classmates to hitting on cute girls or cute guys, even keeping up with birthdays.

“On the first page it pops up. It will tell you, like, different people’s birthdays coming up in the next weeks. And that, to me, is by far the best feature.”
5. It’s no wonder facebook fits college students’ need so well. College students invented it. Three Harvard undergrats launched the facebook just a year and a half ago. CEO Mark Zuckerberg says they wanted to update the traditional freshmen year facebook by putting it online and then linking universities across the country in a cyber community where everyone feels secure.

“It’s..umm..the feeling you get from it.. that it’s a closed network, so if you are on the Harvard facebook or any school’s facebook you are in a geared community.”
6. Facebook helped give a new definition to the concept of friends. From a person you just met at a party to an old childhood pal at a different school, once you are listed someone’s friend you are connected to their friends too. It gives 6 degrees of separation a whole new meaning.
“You search for someone you haven’t talked to in years, or like somehow their name comes up and you just go, ‘Oh, let me look upon my facebook.’”
7. Mark and his colleagues have found just the right code to crack the college student market. Last September facebook was on 30 college campuses and had 150,000 users. By June it had spread over 800 schools and more than 3 million users. Kathleen Hays, CNN, New York. | [앵커멘트]

3. 페이스북이라는 용어가 생소하다면 아마 스물 다섯 살 이상이실 겁니다. 페이스북은 대학생을 위해 고안된 온라인 졸업앨범입니다. 무료이고, 필요한 건 .(닷) edu로 끝나는 대학생과 최근 졸업생에 주어지는 이메일 주소뿐입니다.
4. 중독성이 있는 페이스북은 스터디 그룹을 짜고, 마음에 드는 남학생,여학생에게 호감을 표시하고, 친구들의 생일을 챙기는 일에 이용됩니다.

"사이트를 열면 2주 후에 생일이 돌아올 친구들 명단이 뜨는데 그게 제일 마음에 듭니다."
5. 페이스북이 학생들의 구미에 딱 맞는 이유는 바로 대학생이 개발했기 때문입니다. 하버드 재학생 세 명이 일 년 반 전에 개발한 것입니다. 대표 마크 주커버그는 기존 졸업앨범을 온라인화해서 전국 대학을 링크한 편안한 사이버 코뮤니티를 만들자는 생각을 실현했습니다.

"자신들만의 폐쇄된 공간이라는 친밀감을 주는 네트웍이라는 게 장점입니다."
6. 친구의 개념도 새롭게 정의되고 했습니다. 파티에서 처음 본 사람부터 다른 대학에 간 고향 친구까지 친구로 등록하면 그들의 친구와도 연결됩니다. 여섯 사람만 거치면 누구나 다 아는 사람이라는 이론도 수정이 필요할 듯합니다.
"몇 년간 못 만난 친구가 떠오르면 페이스북을 찾아보게 됩니다."
7. 대학생을 겨냥한 페이스북의 전략은 대성공을 거뒀습니다. 작년 9월까지만 해도 링크된 대학은 30개에 이용자도 15만 명이었는데 올 6월에는 800개 대학에 이용자도 3백만을 넘어섰습니다.
