1. North Korea faces other problems aside from the crisis over its nuclear policy. The World Food Program says North Korea is headed towards the worst humanitarian food crisis since the mid-1990s. That’s when an estimated 1 million North Koreans died from hunger. The WFP says 6.5 million North Koreans desperately need food aid. But the inequities of a totalitarian state create other difficulties. Stan Grant brings us the story of one woman who made a live-or-die escape from her homeland.

2. We’ll call her ‘Miss Kim.’ We have to disguise her identity. There is no disguising her harrowing story. The story of a woman’s desperate escape from the most reclusive nation on earth; a battle with the life-threatening illness; the fear of torture and execution. And her wish now just to be loved.
3. It begins in a border town in North Korea. Only a narrow river crossing from China. It was from here Miss Kim plotted her escape. She had reached breaking point. There was no turning back.
4. Picture this; a woman afraid comes down to the river’s edge under cover of darkness. She knows she must make it from there, North Korea, across to this side, China. If she is caught she could be shot. At the very least, she would go to prison. If she stays there in North Korea, she will surely die from her illness. She simply can’t get the treatment that she needs. Slowly she wades in. She makes it to the other side. But then, is another surprise waiting for her.
5. In the darkness, she is seized by people-poachers waiting to kidnap women crossing the border. They are sold to the highest bidder as wives or maids. Obviously sick suffering cirrhosis of the liver, she was worthless to the poachers. Miss Kim pleaded to be released to her cousin living in a nearby town.
6. Today Miss Kim is nervous. She fidgets with her hands, grabbing at her dress. A local Korean community leader has brought us here, but she is anxious about our camera. Is she scared, we asked. ‘Yes, I can scared,’ she says, ‘I’m scared I might get caught.’ Her cousin is afraid for her.
7. We are careful not to show anything that could identify this apartment. We can film Miss Kim only watching television. Hers is a life of fear and secrecy. But so it was back in North Korea. A world, she says, where everyone is suspicious of each other. ‘I don’t know that much. I just think about how I can survive,’ she tells us, ‘I don’t even know my neighbor. After work, I just fall asleep.’ Miss Kim was once planning to marry. She was pregnant, but forced into an abortion. She says her husband dumped her when she became sick. ‘You can’t imagine how lonely I was in North Korea,’ she says.
8. Now in China, she goes to a Korean church like this one, her only contact with the world outside her cousin’s apartment. She is only just beginning to learn about religion. In North Korea, leader Kim Jung Il was god. Even today, away out of North Korea, she won’t talk about him.
9. Miss Kim’s illness is improving, but she can not visit hospital or see a doctor for a proper diagnosis. She tells us only that her liver is enlarged, it makes her tired and that without treatment she would die. She is worried that she is a burden to her cousin who risk punishment if caught harboring a fugitive.
10. But she is surrounded by a supportive large Korean community on the Chinese side of the border. And for the first time, she can dream of the future of marriage and happiness. ‘Just someone who could love me,’ she says, ‘I wish he’d be handsome and strong.’ Finally a smile from a woman whose story reminds us of the torment of ordinary life in the Hermit Kingdom. A torment Miss Kim and hundreds of thousands of others have risked everything to escape from.

2. 신분이 노출돼서는 안되기 때문에 이 북한 여성을 그냥 김 씨라 부르지만 그의 목숨을 건 탈출기에는 한 치의 거짓이 없습니다. 그는 지구상에서 가장 폐쇄적인 국가, 북한에서 탈출하는 데 성공했습니다. 질병과 고문, 처형의 위험을 무릅쓰고 탈출한 그의 유일한 소망은 사랑 받는 것입니다.
3. 좁은 강을 사이에 두고 중국과 맞닿아있는 북한의 국경마을에서 이야기는 시작됩니다. 김 씨가 탈출계획을 세운 곳이 바로 여깁니다. 막다른 골목에 몰린 그는 더 이상 돌아갈 데가 없었습니다.
4. 어두운 밤을 틈 타 강가로 나와 강 저쪽의 북한에서 이쪽의 중국으로 건너온다고 상상해보십시오. 만약 붙잡히면 총살당하거나 감옥에 가게 될 겁니다. 그러나 김 씨는 북한에 남아있는다해도 적절한 치료를 받을 수 없어 병으로 죽게 될 처지였습니다. 마침내 물살을 가르고 강을 건넜지만 또 다른 놀라운 일이 그를 기다리고 있었습니다.
5. 국경을 건너는 북한 여성을 잡기 위해 어둠 속에서 기다리고 있던 인신 매매단에 붙잡힌 것입니다. 탈북 여성을 아내나 가정부로 팔아 넘겨 돈을 챙기는 사람들입니다. 그러나 간경변으로 병색이 완연한 김 씨는 상품가치가 없는 것으로 판명됐고, 그는 근처 마을에 살고 있는 사촌집으로 보내달라고 애원했습니다.
6. 취재진이 지역 한인 사회 지도자의 안내를 받고 방문하던 날, 김 씨는 치마 자락을 손으로 만지작거리며 초조한 모습을 보였습니다. 카메라를 보고 몹시 불안해 했습니다. 두려우냐고 물으니 그렇다고 답합니다. 잡힐까 봐 두렵다고 말합니다. 그의 사촌 역시 마찬가집니다.
7. 그가 은신해있는 집에 대한 단서가 될만한 그 어떤 것도 보여주지 않기 위해 김 씨가 티비를 보는 장면만 촬영했습니다. 그렇게 그의 삶은 공포와 비밀에 쌓여있습니다. 그러나 북한에 있을 때도 마찬가지였습니다. 그 곳에서는 서로를 의심하며 산다고 김 씨는 증언합니다. 그는 '살아 남는 것에만 집중해 이웃이 누군지도 모르고 그냥 하루하루 근근히 버티며 살았다'고 말합니다. 김 씨는 결혼할 계획이 있었습니다. 임신을 했지만 강제 낙태를 당했고, 병에 걸리자 남편에게 버림받았습니다. 그는 북한에서 너무 외로웠다고 울먹입니다.
8. 그는 중국의 한인 교회에 나가는데 사촌이외에 유일한 외부 세계와의 접촉 기횝니다. 종교에도 이제 막 눈을 뜨고 있습니다. 북한에서는 김 정일 지도자가 신이고, 북한을 떠난 지금도 그에 대해서는 말을 극히 아낍니다.
9. 병세는 호전되고 있지만 적절한 치료를 받기 위해 병원도 의사도 찾을 수 없는 처집니다. 간이 좋지 않아 피로감을 느끼며 치료를 받지 못하면 죽게 될 거라고 그는 말합니다. 사촌에 짐이 되는 것도 걱정입니다. 탈북자를 숨겨주다 발각되면 체포되기 때문입니다.
10. 그러나 이제는 그를 도우려는 한인 사회가 있고, 태어나 처음으로 결혼과 행복이라는 미래를 계획하고 있습니다. '자신을 사랑해주는 사람이면 되지만, 이왕이면 잘 생기고 건강했으면' 좋겠다고 말하며 처음으로 활짝 웃는 김 씨의 모습은, 은둔의 나라, 북한에서의 평범한 일상이 얼마나 각박한 지 반증하고 있습니다. 김 씨를 비롯한 수십 만 명이 죽을 걸 각오하고 탈출하려는 이유도 바로 그 때문입니다. |
