1. U.S. Undersecretary of State for Diplomacy Karen Hughes has wrapped up her visit to 3 countries meant really to polish the U.S.’s image in the Muslim world. It was billed as ‘listening tour’, but as Andrea Koppel reports the President’s special envoy has gotten an earful.

2. Like a political candidate on the campaign trail Karen Hughes has been working the crowd, doing what she knows best, staying on message.
“I hope that most people want our policy to be support for a Palestine state for example.”
3. As one of President Bush's closest advisors it's a formula that worked well for Hughes when she was selling Bush to the American people. But here on the Arab and Muslim street her efforts to sell Bush's policies are proving much more difficult. Difficult because more than two and a half years after the U.S. invaded Iraq anti-American sentiment and a growing suspicion about a hidden U.S. agenda, even among close U.S. allies, have hit record-highs. Here in Turkey for instance, a book entitled “Metal Storm” in which U.S. troops invade Turkey has become a bestseller.
4. The only books on Hughes agenda here the ones she donated to a Turkish elementary school. While this event dedicated to discussing women's rights was supposed to help Hughes highlight US solidarity with the Turkish people. Instead the women turned the tables on Hughes venting their frustrations about the continued U.S. military presence in Iraq.
“I believe that the United States should bear the responsibility of blocking the way that leads to violence and war. And we are very much prepared to cooperate with the United States for the welfare of women and humanity.”
5. Earlier this week in Saudi Arabia Hughes lectured newspaper editors about inflammatory literature found in American mosques. While off-camera hundreds of young female college students and teachers lectured Hughes about imposing American values on them.
6. Because of her close relationship with President Bush at every stop during this week's public diplomacy campaign Hughes got the red carpet, meeting a King, a Prime Minister and even the Coptic Pope. Press reports in the region questioned her motives. The pan-Arab newspaper Al-Hayat said Hughes trip had "failed because she is simply carrying a fake message and mission." In Egypt a government-run newspaper editorial called Hughes trip "American Plastic Surgery." "Egyptians, Saudis and Turks are not going to like America all of sudden. Emotions might change, however, if the US changes the way it deals with us."

3. 부시 대통령의 최측근인 휴즈 차관의 이러한 전략은 부시 대통령의 당선에 일조하기도 했습니다. 그러나 아무리 휴즈 차관이라도, 중동 지역의 거리 한 복판에서 부시 대통령의 정책에 대한 지지를 구하긴 쉽지 않아 보입니다. 여기엔 이유가 있습니다. 미국의 이라크 공격 후 2년 반이 지난 현재, 미국의 편에 있는 중동 국가들 조차도 극심한 반미감정과 미국 정책에 대한 강한 의구심을 보이고 있습니다. 여기 터키에서도 미국이 터키를 침공한다는 내용의 소설이 베스트셀러를 기록하고 있습니다.
4. 그러나 터키에서 휴즈 차관에게 의미있는 책은 터키 초등학교에 기부한 책들 뿐입니다. 터키 여권 운동가들과의 토론회는 당초 미국과 터키와의 결속을 다지기 위한 의도로 기획됐지만, 이 자리는 미군의 이라크 주둔에 대한 성토장으로 변했습니다.
"미국은 이라크에서의 폭력 사태와 전쟁에 대한 책임을 져야 합니다. 터키는 여성을 비롯한 전 인류의 복지 향상을 위해 미국과 협력하고자 합니다."
5. 이번 주 초 사우디 아라비아의 신문 편집장들과 만난 자리에서, 휴즈 차관은 미국의 이슬람교 사원에서 발견된 선동적 저작물에 대한 우려를 표시했습니다. 그런데 방송에 방영되진 않았지만, 수백 명의 여대생들과 교사들이 오히려 휴즈 차관에게 미국적 가치의 강요에 대한 불만을 나타내기도 했습니다.
6. 부시 대통령과의 돈독한 관계를 자랑하는 휴즈 차관은 이번 순방길에서 극빈 대접을 받았으며, 국왕과 총리 및 이집트의 콥트 교황과도 회동을 가졌습니다. 그러나 현지 언론은 이러한 행보에 의심스러운 눈길을 보냅니다. 알 하얏 지는 휴즈 차관의 순방이 거짓된 메시지와 제스처로 일관하고 있다고 비난했으며, 이집트의 국영 신문도 휴즈 차관이 중동을 미국식 얼굴로 개조하려 한다며 일침을 놓았습니다. 또한 이 신문은 이집트와 사우디, 터키에서의 반미 감정이 하루 아침에 사라질 수 없다며,미국의 태도가 변해야 반미 감정도 수그러들 것이라고 주장했습니다.
7. 이 기념품으로 휴즈 차관은 짧은 중동 방문을 잊지 않겠지만, 앞으로 미국과 아랍권의 관계가 원활한 소통을 이룰지 아니면 막다른 골목에 부딪힐 지는 미지숩니다.
