1. The case of Terri Schiavo was bringing renewed attention to the right-to-end-life issues around the world. Now the debate has long been raging in Europe. This year a film about a realife quadriplegic, who fought the Spanish court for his right to die, won the Academy award for Best Foreign Film and brought the issue of euthanasia into the spotlight. Madrid bureau chief, Al Goodman has more.

2. “Mar Adentro” or “the Sea Inside” tells the true story of a quadriplegic who wanted to end his life, and in the process became the Spain’s most famous case of euthanasia. The movie asks ‘Did this man Ramon Sampedro have the right to say his life belong to him and no one else.”

“What we wanted to show was that this man afte 30 years decides he wants to die. And he doesn’t seem to us like a mad man as some pepole have suggested.”
3. Ramon Sampedro was paralysed below the neck in a diving accident, able to smoke only if someone put a cigarette in his mouth as depicted in the film. He learned how to write, holding a pen between his teeth. And he went to court to ask for the right to commit assistance-suicide. His plea was rejected. But he got friends to help anyway. In January 1998 he was videotaped drinking poison and making his final statement.

4. Socialist Party official Matilda Valentin says that there are no plans to legalize assistance-suicide here, nor does she agree with the way the Schiavo cas has been handled.

“Suddenly the President and the Congress passed the law to change the legal situation. This rush on the issues without consensus cannot solve the problem.”
5. Various opinion polls in the past decade have shown a majority of Spaniards favor decriminalizing assisted suicide. In one poll even a majority of Spanish doctors say terminally ill patients should have the option of euthanasia.
6. On the streets of Madrid, the consensus seems to be against prolonging life unnaturally. “If the woman situation is irreversable I think they should let her go,” says this retiree. “I would see euthanasia more justified in the case of American woman than Sampedro,” says this man.
7. The Catholic church says that God’s will must allow to prevail.

2. 영화 "씨 인사이드"는 죽기를 원했던 한 전신 마비 환자의 이야기입니다. 스페인의 가장 유명한 안락사 사건을 담은 이 작품은 라몬 샘페드로가 과연 자신의 삶은 자신의 것이고 그 누구도 간섭할 수 없다고 말할 수 있는 권리가 있는지에 대해 질문을 던집니다.

"30년의 고민 끝에 죽기로 결심한 한 남자의 이야기를 전하고 싶었습니다. 일부의 의견과 달리 이 사람은 절대 정신 이상자로 보이지 않았습니다."
3. 라몬 샘페드로는 다이빙 사고로 머리를 제외한 전신이 마비됐습니다. 영화에서 묘사됐듯이 담배도 누군가 입에 넣어주어야만 피울 수 있었습니다. 그는 입에 연필을 물고 글 쓰는 법을 배웠고 그 뒤 자살 보조를 허락해 줄 것을 법원에 요청했습니다. 법원은 그의 호소를 거절했지만 라몬 삼페드로는 친구의 도움을 받아 자살을 강행했습니다. 1998년 1월, 그는 독극물을 마신 뒤 마지막 유언을 비디오 테이프에 남겼습니다.

4. 사회당의 마틸드 발렌틴 씨는 스페인은 자살 보조를 합법화할 계획이 전혀 없지만 미국의 시아보 사건이 처리된 방식엔 동의할 수 없다고 말했습니다.

"대통령과 의회가 갑자기 법을 통과시켜 법적 상황을 바꿔버렸습니다. 합의가 없는 일방적인 조치는 문제를 해결할 수 없습니다."
5. 지난 10년 간 다양한 여론 조사 결과 대다수의 스페인 인들은 자살 보조를 탈범죄화해야 한다는 데 찬성하는 것으로 나타났습니다. 한 여론 조사에선 스페인의 의사들도 대다수가 말기 환자는 안락사를 선택할 수 있어야 한다는 데 찬성하는 것으로 드러났습니다.
6. 마드리드의 시민들도 부자연스럽게 생명을 연장하는 데는 반대하는 것으로 나타났습니다.
"돌이킬 수 없는 상태라면 보내줘야 한다고"고 이 노인은 말합니다.
이 청년은 "샘페드로의 경우보단 테리 시아보의 경우가 안락사가 더 정당한 거 같다"고 합니다.
7. 가톨릭 교회는 신의 뜻에 따라야 한다는 입장입니다.
