1. A very different picture of relations with China is emerging from Tokyo. That's where there's been strong reaction to anti-Japanese protests in China over the weekend that signal worsening of relations. Japan's Prime Minister called the situation extremely regrettable, while others call for an apology. Atika Shubert explains from Tokyo.

2. This is why Japan wants an apology from China; thousands of Chinese protesters throwing rocks and bottles at the Japanese Embassy and Consulate in China, shattering windows and damaging property. Japanese businesses were also targeted, plus two students were beaten for simply identifying themselves as Japanese.
3. This is one reason behind the violence, a new history textbook recently approved by the Japanese government. Critics say it whitewashes Japan's atrocities during World War II, 'poisoning the minds of Japanese youth' according to a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
4. Yet, less than 0.3% of Japanese schools actually use the controversial book. And differing accounts of World War II is nothing new between China and Japan, that argument has run for decades. So, why the violent protests?

5. This may be another more political reason; Japan's bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. China has the only Asian seat with veto power on the Security Council and it strongly opposes Japan's bid, saying the country has not atoned for atrocities in World War II.
6. The Japanese politicians say there's more.

"Chinese side has a kind of perception that they are the representative from Asian region. So China, you know, doesn't want to see Japan as another representative from the same region. I think still, I believe that Chinese reaction to this issue is not right at all."
Whatever the reason, these protests have touched the nerves in both countries and they are set to continue.
7. Japan may be demanding an apology but China's certainly not giving one. And Japan's not likely to back down on its bid for the Security Council. The fact is China and Japan have becsome rivals for economic and political power in the region. So, expect more to come.

1. 지난 주말 중국에서 격렬한 반일 시위가 벌어지고 일본 정부가 이에 강력히 항의하고 나서면서 중국과 일본 사이에 긴장이 고조되고 있습니다. 고이즈미 일본 총리는 중국의 반일 시위에 깊은 유감을 표명했으며 일본 내에선 공식 사과를 요구하는 목소리도 나오고 있습니다. 자세한 소식입니다.

2. 이것이 일본이 중국의 사과를 요구하는 이유입니다. 중국의 시위대 수천명이 일본 대사관과 영사관에 돌과 병을 던져 유리창이 깨지는 등 기물이 훼손됐습니다. 일본 기업들도 공격의 표적이 됐고, 일본인 학생 두 명이 집단 구타를 당하기도 했습니다.
3. 이 처럼 격렬한 시위가 벌어진 데는 최근 일본 정부가 승인한 새 역사 교과서가 하나의 원인으로 작용했습니다. 중국은 이 새 교과서가 일본이 2차 대전 중 저지른 잔학 행위를 미화하고 왜곡했다고 비판하고 있습니다. 중국 외교부는 이 교과서가 일본 청소년의 마음을 오염시킨다는 성명도 발표했습니다.
4. 그러나 일본 내에서 이 역사 교과서를 실제로 채택하는 학교는 0.3%도 채 안되는데다, 중국과 일본이 2차 대전 중 벌어진 일들에 대해 서로 다른 주장을 하는 것도 어제 오늘의 일이 아닙니다. 양국 간 이런 입씨름은 벌써 수십년째 계속 돼 왔던 겁니다. 그렇다면 새삼 격렬한 시위가 벌어진 이유는 무엇일까요?
5. 아마도 좀 더 강한 정치적인 이유가 작용한 건지도 모릅니다. 일본은 현재 유엔 안전 보장 이사회의 상임 이사국 진출을 노리고 있습니다. 그러나 아시아 유일의 안보리 상임 이사국으로서 거부권을 가진 중국은 일본의 상임 이사국 진출을 강력히 반대하고 있습니다. 일본이 2차 대전 중 저지른 잔학 행위에 대해 충분히 반성하지 않았다는 게 반대 이유입니다.
6. 그러나 일본 정치인들은 또 다른 이유가 있다고 주장합니다.

"중국은 자기네가 아시아를 대표한다고 생각합니다. 따라서 일본이 아시아의 또 다른 대표 국가로 나서는 걸 원하지 않습니다. 전 이 사안에 대한 중국의 반응이 옳지 않다고 생각합니다."
이유가 무엇이든 중국의 반일 시위는 두 나라 모두의 신경을 건드려 놓았고 당분간은 멈출 기미도 안보입니다.
7. 일본은 사과를 요구했지만 중국은 전혀 사과할 기미가 없어 보이고, 일본도 안보리 상임 이사국 진출을 포기할 거 같진 않습니다. 사실 일본과 중국은 역내 경제 정치 강대국으로서 서로 경쟁 관계이기 때문에 이런 마찰은 앞으로도 계속될 것으로 보입니다. |
