1. The year is 100 B.C. Julius Caesar is born in Rome. The Chinese discover natural gas and somewhere in northern Egypt, a person is buried. But this isn't your run of the mill mummy as Cairo bureau chief Ben Wedeman discovers.

2. In most places putting your head in the sand won't get you anywhere. Egypt is an exception. Archaeologists have been digging at Sakkara, site of the famed step pyramid, for over a hundred years. And till now have only just scratched the dusty surface.
3. Egypt's top archaeologist, Zahi Hawas, shows off the latest find-an immaculate mummy dating back two thousand two hundred years. Not a pharaoh or minister, though someone who clearly possessed the wherewithal to go out in style.
"We believe that this is an important person, because this I haven't seen, in my, you know, I found two hundred and fifty mummies in my excavations at the valley of the golden mummies. I have never found a mummy like this."
4. The mummy is to be left intact, but will undergo a CT-scan, a three dimensional X-ray. Archaeology is painstaking, time-consuming work under conditions far from ideal. But despite all this and the best efforts of grave robbers over the centuries, there are still many secrets waiting to be uncovered.
5. The possibility of more discoveries here is pretty good. Each one of these shafts which number about forty five and are now full of sand and rocks could also contain more mummies and more surprises. Ben Wedeman, CNN, Sakkara, Egypt.

2. 아무리 땅을 파도 뭔가를 발견하기란 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 이집트만은 예욉니다. 계단식 피라미드가 발견된 사카라에서 고학학자들의 발굴작업은 100년이 넘게 계속돼왔는데 지금까지 표면만 긁었을 뿐입니다.
3. 이집트 최고 권위의 고고학자, 자히 하와즈는 최근 발견한, 온전한 형태의 2천 2백년 전 미이라를 공개했습니다. 파라오나 각료는 아니었지만 돈이 많았던 사람의 것으로 추정됩니다.
"지금까지 250개의 미이라를 발견했지만 그동안 볼 수 없었던 모습으로, 중요한 인물이었던 것으로 보입니다. 이런 건 정말 처음입니다."
4. 3차원 X-레이인 CT 스캔 기술을 통해 손대지 않고 내부를 살펴볼 예정입니다. 고고학이란 노동과 시간이 많이 들어가는 일입니다. 작업 여건도 이상적인 것과는 거리가 멉니다. 수세기 동안 지속된 발굴과 도굴에 불구하고, 아직도 발견되지 않은 비밀이 많습니다.
5. 현재로썬 추가 발굴 가능성이 매우 높습니다. 마흔 다섯 개 가량의 축대가, 지금은 물론 모래와 돌 뿐이지만, 더 많은 미이라와 더 놀라운 비밀을 밝혀줄 지 모릅니다.
