1. Israel is known for its high-tech sector, but Palestinians are also using technology in innovative ways. As Hala Gorani reports, cyberspace is open when many roads aren’t. And more and more Palestinians are turning to the Internet to advance their lives.

2. This is the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza. After four years of intifada, the economy in this strip of land is in ruins. Unemployment hovering around 50%, violence and almost complete isolation have ravaged business and morale. Yet one industry is unexpectedly booming in the midst of all this desolation. High-tech is catching on.
“You need to take permission from the Israeli side, so it’s very difficult to move outside Gaza. So the computer’s the only way to contact your relatives outside.”
3. In the last four years since the beginning of second intifada, Internet use in the Palestinian territory has increased more than 300%, according to the Internet World Stats. That’s more than Lebanon, Turkey or the UAE.
Net 4 You is one of some of several Internet cafes in Gaza. Owner Ali Hamadei tells me about 100 customers stream here daily. And more and more use computers to communicate with people they can’t talk to in person. 13% of Palestinians now use the Internet to chat online, versus close to zero four years ago.
4. The Buray family bought a computer a few years ago for 700 dollars. As residents of the Gaza Strip, they say they’ve not been authorized to travel to the West Bank since 2000. So, to stay in touch with two of their daughters in Ramala, they use a web cam, or gather around pictures of a granddaughter they haven’t met yet.
The Internet allows me to visit the world while sitting here the whole time, says Mohammad, one of the Buray’s twelve children.
It also allows him to take a family photo and send it to his sister in Ramala.
5. We leave the Buray home, south of Gaza City back north to the Gaza-Israeli border. The Israeli government says increased border controls are necessary to keep out suicide bombers. And when we get there, it’s easy to understand why even for those allowed out by Israel, using the Internet to communicate is easier than making the trip in person.
6. We’ve now reached the Palestinian side of the border here at Aras crossing. From this point to the Israeli side, is about one kilometer, or thousand meters. But it takes ordinary Palestinians quite a long time to cross over. The guards here are telling us it sometimes takes up to 6 hours.
7. Some Palestinian universities are also using technology to help students who sometimes can’t make it to class stay up-to-date with their coursework. Birzeit University created an online learning system called Ritaj two years ago at the height of the violence and closures, streaming classes online. According to the Palestinian Center Bureau of Statistics, the number of Palestinians who use computers for educational purposes has jumped 30% since 2000.
8. And remember the Buray family in Gaza? In Ramala, we caught up with the two sisters, who chat online with their Gaza family. We watched them download the picture their brother sent online for the first time. The electronic portrait of parents, brothers, nieces and nephews they haven’t seen in person in four years.
9. For 27 year old Safat, an emotional process.
"I have the image of my father 5 years ago or 10 years ago. When I saw the picture, he is so much old, he’s becoming thin.”
Relatives and friends, growing up and growing old on a computer screen, with hopes that the latest peace momentum will bring families divided back together.

2. 지난 4년간 지속된 유혈충돌 속에 가자 즈바이야 난민촌의 경제는 파탄났습니다. 실업률이 무려 50%에 달하고 폭력과 고립으로 사업과 사기는 바닥에 떨어졌습니다. 그러나 한 분야만 유독 호황세를 보이고 있습니다. 뜻밖에도 첨단 기술 분얍니다.
"이스라엘의 출입 허가증을 받기가 하늘의 별따기이기때문에 컴퓨터만이 외부의 친척과 접촉할 수 있는 유일한 방법입니다."
3. 2차 무장봉기가 시작되고 지난 4년간 팔레스타인 영토내 인터넷 사용자 수가 300% 이상 증가했다고 합니다. 이는 레바논이나 터키, 아랍에미레이트보다 높은 수칩니다. <넷포유>는 가자의 여러 인터넷 카페 중 하나로, 최근에는 하루 평균 100여명이 찾으며, 직접 만나 소식을 전할 수 없는 사람들과 통신하기 위해 점점 더 많은 사람이 찾고 있습니다. 팔레스타인의 인터넷 채팅자 수는 4년 전 0%에서 13%로 크게 늘었습니다.
4. 보레이 가족은 몇 년 전 7백 달러를 주고 컴퓨터를 한 대 들여놓았습니다. 가자 지구에 사는 이들은 지난 2000년부터 서안 여행이 금지된 이후, 라말라에 사는 두 딸의 소식을 듣기 위해 웹캠을 이용해 아직 만나보지 못한 외손주의 사진을 봅니다.보레이 씨의 12 자녀 중 한 명인 모하메드는 인터넷 덕분에 앉아서 전 세계를 누빌 수 있다고 말합니다. 가족 사진을 찍어 라말라에 있는 여동생들에게 보낼 수도 있습니다.
5. 취재진은 가자 시 남부의 보레이 씨 집을 떠나 북쪽의 가자와 이스라엘 국경으로 향했습니다. 이스라엘은 자살폭탄테러 방지를 위해 국경 강화가 불가피하다고 말하고 있고, 출입허가증을 가졌더라도 인터넷 통신이 훨씬 낫다는 사실을 현장에서 확인할 수 있었습니다.
6. 저는 지금 에레즈 국경의 팔레스타인 쪽에 서 있습니다. 이스라엘까지는 1킬로미터 밖에 안 되지만, 팔레스타인인들이 이곳을 통과하려면 긴 시간이 걸립니다.어떤 경우에는 최고 6시간이 걸릴 때도 있다고 합니다.
7. 일부 팔레스타인 대학도 출석할 수 없는 재학생의 교과과정 이수를 돕기위해 기술을 동원하고 있습니다. 비르제이트 대학은 폭력으로 도시가 완전 봉쇄됐던 2년전 온라인 학습 시스템을 구축했습니다. 팔레스타인 통계국에 따르면 교육 목적으로 컴퓨터를 이용하는 팔레스타인인 수가 2000년이래 30% 증가했다고 합니다.
8. 다시 가자의 보레이 가족 이야깁니다. 취재진은 라말라에 사는 두 딸의 집을 방문했습니다. 이들은 오빠가 전송한 가족 사진을 다운로드하고, 지난 4년간 만나지 못한 부모와 오, 조카들의 사진을 들여다보고 있습니다.
9. 올해 27의 사파드는 눈물에 목이 메입니다.
"5년전, 10년전 아버지 사진을 가지고 있는데, 오늘 사진을 보니 너무 많이 늙으셨더라구요...많이 여위신 것 같기도 하고..."
가족과 친지, 친구들이 컴퓨터 스크린 상에서 성장하고, 또 나이를 먹고 있습니다. 부디 중동 평화 과정이 재개돼 이들 이산 가족이 상봉할 날이 올 수 있기를 바랍니다. |
