1. Nearly a hundred extreme racers from all over the world are wrapping up adventure of a lifetime. They just spent a week in China’s Gobi desert, taking on a grueling challenge in a hostile climate. But for the sportswoman who made this happen, turning her passion for outdoors into a successful business, was almost as tough as the race itself. James MacDonalds explains.

2. They may be training hard, but nothing fully prepares these ultra-marathoners for what they’re about to face. After all, how do you get ready for a 250 km-race, 155 miles across one of the harshest places on earth. The Gobi March is a week long track through China’s remote desert, organized by Hongkong based ‘Racing the Planet.’ For 2,600 dollars, you get a grueling physical and mental workout, plus your fair share of blisters.
3. But company founder Mary Gadams says it’s money well spent.

“I get letters all the time from people telling me how this has really changed their lives and they go on to do even greater and grander things.”
She can relate. Gadams is a veteran of more than 60 marathons and adventure races. But if you think, running the race looks tough, try running it as a business. Her first Gobi march happened at the height of the SARS epidemic. She’s dealt with government red tape and the challenges of setting up a sporting event in the middle of nowhere.
4. Despite all that, Racing the Planet is succeeding and growing. From its base here in Hongkong, the company now organizes the prestigious Four Desert Series, which includes races in Chile, the Sahara and soon, Antarctica.
5. The key has been attracting adventurers of all kinds, not just elite athletes, from rookies to hard-core racers, from twenty somethings to retirees. Gadams’ goal is to build Racing the Planet into a global adventure brand. She’s moved into selling outdoor gear, using lessons learned in sports to tackle new frontiers in business.

“There is never the perfect time to do anything. And we also tell people who are contemplating doing our races that you’re never going to be prefectly fit, and you are never going to perfectly ready to start your own company. Just do it.”
For this sports entrepreneur, the finish line is still miles away.

2. 강훈련을 했지만 실전은 상상을 초월합니다. 사실 그 누가 덥고 건조한 사막을 장장 250 킬로미터나 달리는 데 당할 낼 수 있겠습니까? 홍콩의 레이싱 더 플래닛이라는 기업이 주최한 <고비 마치> 대회는 일주일간 고비 사막을 걷거나 달리는 것입니다. 참가비 2천 6백 달러를 내고 고통스러운 심신단련과 어마어마한 물집을 얻게 됩니다.
3. 그러나 메리 개담스 사장은 가치 있는 일이라고 말합니다.

"인생관이 바뀌었다는 참가자들의 편지를 많이 받고, 나중에 더 크고 더 멋진 도전을 하는 사람들도 많습니다."
개담스 사장 역시 60여개의 마라톤과 어드번쳐 대회에 참가했던 베테랑입니다. 그러나 사업 운영은 대회만큼이나 만만치 않습니다. 사스 창궐때 첫번째 <고비 마치> 행사 준비를 해야했는데 중국 정부의 관료주의와 아무 것도 없는 데서 시작해야 하는 도전을 이겨냈습니다.
4. 이 모든 어려움에도 불구하고 회사는 성장하고 있습니다. 이미 네 개의 사막 대회를 조직했는데, 여기에는 칠레, 사하라가 포함되고 곧 남극 대회도 추가될 예정입니다.
5. 성공의 열쇠는 몸짱 뿐 아니라 모험을 즐기는 모든 사람들, 그리고 이십대에서 노년층을 대상으로 한다는 것입니다. 개담스 사장은 레이싱 더 플래닛을 국제적인 브랜드로 키울 계획을 갖고, 아웃도어 장비 판매 사업에도 뛰어들었습니다. 스포츠를 하면서 익힌 교훈을 사업에 적용합니다.
"모든 일에 적기라는 건 없습니다. 먼저 몸을 만든 후 참가하겠다는 사람들에게 이렇게 말하곤 하죠. 완벽한 준비라는 건 없으니 당장 시작하라고 말입니다."
