1. One elephant calf in India may be resting a bit safer after a close call with an open well. The calf had slipped on the rain soaked to ground and fallen in late Monday. Suhasini Haider has more.

2. It's a tight spot for a wild baby elephant to be in. This 10 month old slipped into a dry well in a field in southern India. And villagers nearby say they were alerted to the calf's condition by her mother and members of her herd.
"We saw the mother elephant frantically running around from a distance," says this woman. "And when we came and saw this small baby inside the well, we alerted the forest authorities."
3. For hours, forest officials and villagers tried hard to haul the little one out. But there were no heavy-duty cranes available in this rural part of the south Indian state of Kaira. So rescuers tried throwing leaves into the 30-feet deep well to rise it a bit. Eventually, villagers helped digging a trench down to the well. And with a heave-ho, they pulled the little jumbo out.
4. "The baby is in a state of shock now. And we are showing her to a doctor."
She's lucky to have escaped with only minor leg injuries. Even so, the little one won't go home to her family now. Forest officials say even if they find her wild herd, it's unlikely she'll be taken back. She is on her way, instead to an elephant shelter where they say she'll be treated and trained along with other orphan elephants.

2. 야생 아기 코끼리가 들어가기엔 다소 비좁은 장솝니다. 생후 10개월된 이 아기 코끼리는 인도 남부의 한 밭에서 말라버린 우물에 빠져버렸습니다. 인근 마을 주민들에게 사고 소식을 알린 건 어미 코끼리 등 코끼리 떼의 울음 소리였습니다.
"멀리서 어미 코끼리가 안절부절하며 이리 저리 뛰어다니는 걸 봤습니다. 달려와 보니 아기 코끼리가 우물에 빠져 있었습니다. 우린 즉각 삼림청에 신고했습니다."
3. 삼림청 관리들과 주민들은 이 작은 녀석을 우물에서 끌어내기 위해 여러 시간 동안 애썼지만 워낙 외진 시골이라 크래인 같은 중장비가 없다보니 아무런 진전을 볼 수 없었습니다. 구조대원들은 깊이 9 미터의 우물 속에 나뭇잎을 던져 넣어 지반을 올리는 시도도 해보았습니다. 결국엔 주민들이 나서 우물까지 땅을 파내려 가는 작업을 도와야 했습니다. 그리고 영차하고 힘껏 잡아당겨 간신히 아기 코끼리를 꺼낼 수 있었습니다.
4. "아기 코끼리는 지금 쇼크 상태이기 때문에 치료가 필요합니다."
운 좋겠도 아기 코끼리는 다리에 가벼운 부상을 입었을 뿐 무사했습니다. 하지만 가족에게 돌아갈 수는 없을 겁니다. 삼림 보호 당국은 아기 코끼리의 가족을 찾는다해도 무리가 받아주지 않을 것이라고 했습니다. 따라서 녀석은 코끼리 보호소로 보내져 다른 코끼리들과 함께 치료와 훈련을 받게 될 예정입니다. |
