1. Now the cleanup after hurricane Katrina is still underway in New Orleans. And with tourism vital to the city’s economy, a timetable’s been set to get New Orleans ready to accept visitors again. The deadline, Mardi Gras. CNN’s Carry Lee reports.

2. Mardi Gras, 2006 will mark its 150th anniversary. In Katrina’s wake, organizers are determined to make this year a memorable one.
3. It all starts with the floats. There are hundreds of them stored in warehouses all over the city. Artists here at Mardi Gras World in Algiers are working around the clock to get ready for 2006. It’s all about fun and celebration but Mardi Gras is also a very big business for the city of New Orleans.
4. A million people watch the parades throwing 50 million dollars worth of beads alone.

“It’s a billion plus dollar-a-year industry now. It’s not frivolous. It’s of an economic importance to the city.”
5. With four months to go, the city is far from functional. Hotel rooms and workers are scarce. But officials are confident cleanup and rebuilding will get done.
6. Next year may bring fewer visitors than usual, but the locals will be ready.
“Mardi Gras is not an event. It’s a state of mind.”
7. One advantage for parade organizers, Fat Tuesday falls on February 28th, giving the entire celebration a few extra weeks to plan.

4. 백만 명이 퍼레이드를 지켜보며 목걸이 구입에만 5천만 달러를 사용합니다.

"십억 달러 이상의 사업으로, 경박한 축제가 아닌 도시 경제에 큰 의미를 가집니다."
5. 축제까지 4개월 가량 남겨놓았지만 도시는 아직 제기능을 하지 못하고 있습니다. 호텔객실과 인력도 부족하지만 조직위는 시간 내에 복구 작업이 완료될 것으로 낙관합니다.
6. 내년 축제엔 찾는 관광객이 평소보다 적을 지 모르지만 주민들의 각오도 다부집니다.
"단지 행사가 아니라 우리의 마음 상태를 대변합니다."
7. 그나마 다행인 것은 2006년도 참회의 화요일 즉 마디그라는 2월 28일로, 평소보다 몇 주 더 시간 여유가 있다는 점입니다. |
