1. Well, he is not your usual comic book hero, that’s for sure. Aside from his human character, he has little super strength to flaunt. Still, Nelson Mandela’s legacy is now taking on the world of comic books. Alphonso Van Marsh has the story.

2. It's not the kind of page-turner one would expect about South Africa's former president and hero. But these students are some of the first to see a new comic book series about Nelson Mandela, the country's best-known anti-apartheid activist.

“It's great. I’m going to take it at home, because there are also children at home. So I’m going to give them so that they can learn.”
It's the first of nine comic books in the Madiba Legacy series. Madiba, Mr. Mandela's nickname meaning "great man".
3. This issue focuses on his rural upbringing. Organizers are giving a million copies to schools and newspapers.

“The story about Mandela, in South Africa is well known, in general. But in terms of actually getting it to the new generation, the youth. This is a very youth-oriented means of spreading the story of Madiba and then Mr. Mandela.”
4. Mr. Mandela himself signed off on the privately funded project.

“You know that you are really famous the day that you discover that you have become a comic character.”
Here at the Nelson Mandela foundation, you'll find plenty of caps and gowns from university ceremonies around the world. Universities giving Mr. Mandela honorary degrees. But here in South Africa, there is some concern over this comic book series, concern that it may trivialize the life experiences of South Africa's most senior statesman.

6. Eleven years into South Africa's democratic government, the Mandela foundation is reaching out to those too young to remember South Africa's apartheid past. 만화책은 "마디바의 유산"이란 제목으로 총 9권이 기획돼 있습니다. "마디바"는 만델라 전 대통령의 위대한 업적을 칭송해, 그에게 붙여진 애칭입니다.
3. 이번에 출판된 1권에선 만델라 전 대통령의 어린 시절이 그려져 있습니다. 관계자들은 약 백만부를 학교와 신문사에 배포할 계획입니다.

4. 만델라 전 대통령도 이번 만화책 출판에 지원을 보내고 있습니다.

만델라 전 대통령은 전 세계 유수의 대학으로부터 명예 학위를 받았으며, 그 증거가 이 곳 넬슨 만델라 재단을 장식하고 있습니다. 그러나 만화책을 둘러싼 우려도 있습니다. 만델라 전 대통령의 위대한 업적이 너무 가볍게 다뤄질 수도 있다는 겁니다.

6. 남아공에 민주 정부가 들어선지 11년이 되가고 있습니다. 많은 어린이들은 과거 흑백분리 정책으로 인한 암울했던 과거를 알지 못합니다. 넬슨 만델라 재단은 이번 만화책을 통해, 과거의 힘든 투쟁에 대해 어린이들에게 알리려 하고 있습니다.
