1. In staying with technology, in the sort of gadgets you would find in a James Bond movie. A scuffle over a fake rock in Moscow, allegedly a British surveillance device is stranger than fiction. In the worlds of technology and espionage have always gone hand in hand. Paula Hancocks reports on the real life spying gadgets that could come straight out of Q’s laboratory.

2. James Bond assesses his new gadgets in the film ‘Die Another Day’. Gadgets you'd expect from the world's favorite spy 007. But is this what real-life 007s have been up to recently. Russia's intelligence service accuses four British embassy staff of spying. In a plot that allegedly uses a fake rock to receive and transmit data. The cold war may be over, but according to a former KGB colonel who became a double agent for Britain, there's still plenty of espionage going on.

3. And it may not matter whether countries are allies or enemies espionage is big business.

“The international playing field of intelligence gathering is regardless and operates regardless of whether a country has amicable agreements with others. And it is not only implied against hostile nations or nations that present a threat, it is certainly a question of keeping an eye on your neighbor.”
4. And there are certainly enough gadgets on the market to keep an eye on your neighbor.
“By taking off the button of the front of this, you have a simple camera here which could be fabricated into a packet of cigarettes, into a plant, a piece of furniture, a painting or a rock.”
5. Old adversaries - like Britain and Russia - may work quite closely on counter-terrorism. But there's still some mutual suspicion. And judging from how busy intelligence and counter-espionage firms are, there's little trust that can't be tested. Paula Hancocks, CNN, London. | [앵커멘트]

2. 스파이 제임스 본드의 활약상이 담긴 영화 ‘007 어나더 데이’에서, Q 박사가 평범한 반지처럼 보이지만 방탄유리도 산산조각내는 가공의 신무기를, 제임스 본드 앞에서 시연해 보이는 장면입니다. 영화 속 얘기가 현실로 나타나면서, 적잖은 논란이 되고 있습니다. 러시아 정보당국은 영국 대사관 직원 4명이, 데이터를 송수신할 수 있는 돌 모양의 기기를 이용해, 스파이 활동을 해왔다고 주장했습니다. 전직 KGB 요원이자 영국 측 이중 스파이로 활동한 전문가는 냉전 종식 이후에도 스파이 활동은 계속되고 있다고 말합니다.

3. 첩보 대상은 적과 동맹국을 가리지 않는다는 설명입니다.

"첩보 수집의 무대는 전세곕니다. 우호조약을 맺었는가, 우리의 우방인가는 중요치 않습니다. 적대적이고 위협을 제기하는 국가는 물론이고, 이웃국에 대해서도 감시의 끈을 늦추지 않는 겁니다."
4. 첩보 활동에 동원될 법한, 별의별 첨단 기기들이 개발돼 있습니다.
"덮개를 벗겨내면, 카메라로 촬영이 가능해집니다. 담배갑, 화분, 가구, 그림이나 돌 사이에 손쉽게 숨길 수 있습니다."
5. 영국와 러시아가 비록 대테러전에 있어서 같은 편이지만, 적으로 대치했던 과거 불신의 앙금이 모두 사라진 건 아닙니다. 상대의 속내를 살피기 위한 첩보전이 바쁠 수 밖에 없는 이유가 되고 있습니다. |
