1. As we all know, China is rising fast as a world economic player. And as one British headmaster says his young students will be well placed for the challenges and the opportunities on offer. That’s because he has made Mandarin mandatory. Mallika Kapur has more.

2. Founded in 1845 and steeped in tradition, Brighton College is breaking with the past in a new, rather radical way.

“We're introducing Mandarin Chinese as a core part of the curriculum.”
3. Richard Cairns, the school's headmaster, is the man behind the Mandarin.

“We need to do business with China in the future. The children here, aged 10, 11, 12, 13 are going to be in their 30's when China probably overtakes Japan and Germany as the 2nd and 3rd largest economies.”
4. China's economy is red hot. It grew at an official rate of 9.8 percent last year and is poised to overtake France and Britain to become the world's fourth largest economy. Brighton College says it’s the first school in England to make Mandarin compulsory for all its students. But it’s not the only school offering the course. A primary school in East London has been offering Mandarin to its students since last year. That decision, inspired by a school official's visit to China.
5. Students at both schools say they enjoy learning Mandarin. Some say, they see it's economic benefits.
“The Chinese economy is growing larger so it will be very helpful if you want to go into the business world or have any job that involves traveling around the world.”
6. Till they get that chance to do business with China, or to visit it on holiday, they're getting prepared right here in Britain.

"앞으로 중국과의 교역이 많아질 겁니다. 10세에서 13세에 이르는 이곳 학생들이 30대가 될 때면, 중국이 일본이나 독일을 제치고 세계 제 2 경제 대국으로 성장해 있을 겁니다."
4. 중국 경제는 현재 놀라운 속도로 성장하고 있습니다. 작년 성장률이 9.8%에 달하는 중국은 앞으로 프랑스와 영국을 제치고 세계 4대 경제국으로 올라설 전망입니다. 브라이튼 칼리지는 영국에서는 최초로 북경어를 필수과목으로 지정했습니다. 하지만 이처럼 북경어를 가르치고 있는 학교는 이곳만이 아닙니다. 런던 동부의 한 초등학교에선 작년부터 북경어를 가르치고 있습니다. 이를 계기로 학교 관계자들은 중국을 직접 방문했습니다.
5.두 학교 학생 모두 북경어를 재미있게 배우고 있습니다. 일부는 실질적인 혜택도 인식하고 있습니다.
"중국 경제가 점점 성장하고 있기 때문에, 중국어를 알면 해외 출장이 잦은 직업을 구할 경우 매우 유리할 겁니다."
6. 중국과의 교역에 직접 뛰어들거나, 휴가 철에 중국을 방문할 때까진 학생들은 학교에서 북경어를 공부하며 준비할 겁니다. |
