1. Well, South Africa has made some impressive strides in business since ten years ago.That's when the country sheded its oppressive government and began seeking out opportunities in the global market place. But as Charlayne Hunter_Gault reports, South Africans have found the most success by conducting business within the continent.

2. Almost anywhere you go on the African continent these days, South Africa is there. In East Africa, Kenyans are getting a taste of South Africa's food, filling up here, too. And soon to fill up here at this movie theater under construction.
3. In central Africa,

"This is an opportunity that the South African business with many, too, must not lose."
Here in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa rolled out its biggest gun, the president himself, to drum up business in a country where he'd helped silence the guns.
4. In the west, Nigerians connecting with the help of South Africa, finding hospitality in South African hotels, and cash in South African banks. Since 1994, South African companies have invested more than one billion dollars a year in mining, retail, construction, financial services, telecommunications, and tourism throughout Africa. The continent has become South Africa's second most valuable export market.
5. "What we are doing is we are showing that Africa can invest in Africa."
South African businessmen say they walk where others fear to tread.

"Cause we love here. We are part of Africa. I'm 13th generations of African. So, it's, we are more scared of Europe than we are of Africa."
6. South African institutions are providing loans and sharing risk throughout the 14 countries of the southern African region.

"I think Africa's strategy is to encourage good governance, economic development, economic management within Africans themselves, without any position of any external factors outside African continent."
7. Some have called South Africa's push into the continent the second scramble for Africa, the new colonialism, causing worry that local economies will be overwhelmed by South African multinationals. 2. 요즘 아프리카 대륙 어디를 가보더라도, 남아공 기업 상표를 쉽게 찾아 볼 수 있습니다. 케냐에는 남아공 요식업체들이 진출해 있고, 또 정유업에서 영화관에 이르기까지 진출 영역도 다양합니다.
3. 카빌라 콩고 대통령은 '콩고가 남아공 기업들이 놓치지 말아야 할 시장' 이라 말하며, 콩고 투자 유치에 힘씁니다. 콩고 내전 종식을 지원했던 남아공 대통령도 직접 나서서, 남아공 기업들이 콩고에 진출할 것을 장려하고 있습니다.
4. 한편, 나이제리아에서는 통신, 호텔과 금융서비스 등의 부문에서 남아공 기업들의 활약이 눈부십니다. 1994년 이래, 남아공 기업들은 전 아프리카 대륙에 거쳐 매년 10억 달러 이상을 광산, 소매, 건설, 금융, 통신, 관광 등에 투자해 왔고, 아프리카 대륙은 이제 남아공의 제2대 수출시장입니다.
5. 이는 아프리카 기업들이 아프리카에 투자해 성공할 수 있다는 걸 보여주는 것이고 마치 용기있게 미지의 영역을 개척하는 것과 같다고 이 기업인은 설명합니다.

6. 남아공은 아프리카 남부 14개국에 차관을 제공하며, 위험을 공유하고 있습니다.

"이같은 전략은 아프리카 내부에서 아프리카 국가들에게 좋은 지배구조, 경제 발전 및 건전한 경제운영을 촉진하려는 시도로 볼 수 있습니다. 외부의 간섭에서 아닌 내부적 변화를 일으키려는 거죠."
7. 남아공의 이같은 세력 확장을 또 다른 형태의 식민지배라고 비판하는 목소리도 있습니다. 결국에는 남아공 다국적 기업들이 아프리카 경제를 잠식하게 될 것이라는 우렵니다. 일면 타당한 부분도 있지만, 남아공이 아니면 누가 이 검은 대륙에 대한 투자에 나서겠느냐고 반박하는 이들도 있습니다.
