1. Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon made the rounds in Washington Tuesday, a day after meeting with president Bush. Mr. Sharon received strong backing for his Gaza withdrawal plan, but opposition to any construction of new homes in the West Bank. John Voers has reaction from the settlement that is at the center of all the controversy.

2. This is Maale Adumim, the largest Jewish settlement in occupied Palestinian territory. And the Israeli government has plans to make it even bigger. It's not clear whether those plans will be carried out now that president Bush says "stop the expansion." That's angered some residents like Ella Steinberg who moved here just a year ago.

"I don't think it is right to ask us to stop the building, I think, in a way."
3. Palestinians from the village of Bethany live in the shadow of Maale Adumim. Many here like Shaufun Aisabasa welcome the news that the U.S. wants a freeze in settlement construction. But still, he says, he has little hope for the future. "There will never be peace here", he told me, "without an Israeli withdrawal of all the settlements."
4. To the north, the village is already cut off from Jerusalem by the concrete walls of Israel's barrier, which is being built to stop militant attacks inside Israel. Palestinian taxi driver Radua Bassi believes no matter what the U.S. and Israel say, the construction in Maale Adumim will eventually go ahead, living them completely closed in. "We are living in a prison", he says, "all on one side, settlements on the other, and also check-points."
5. Palestinian officials want the U.S. to continue to pressure Israel to make sure there's no construction. Privately, though, there's frustration that president Bush has once again stated that he doesn't expect Israel to give up the major settlements in the West Bank.

"We welcome the part that is related to the request of president Bush to stop settlement activities and to ask for the removal of all random outposts that are being erected by Israel on a daily basis."
6. And while the president lavishes praise on Ariel Sharon for his plan to withdraw Jewish settlers from all of Gaza and a small part of the West Bank, Israelis opposed to the so called disengagement continue their protests, chaining the gates to almost 200 schools around Tel Aviv, hanging placard which read "Jews, do not expel Jews!". 2. 여기는 팔레스타인 점령 지역 최대의 유태인 정착촌 말레 아두밈입니다. 이스라엘 정부는 이곳을 더욱 확대할 계획이지만 부시 미 대통령의 강한 반대에 부딪혀 이행여부가 불분명합니다. 이에 일 년 전에 이사온 엘라 스타인버그 씨 같은 정착민들은 항의하고 있습니다.

3. 말레 아두밈의 언덕 아래에는 팔레스타인 마을 베다니가 있습니다. 이곳 주민들은 미국이 정착촌 확대에 반대하고 있다는 소식을 환영하면서도, 미래에 대해서는 여전히 비관적인 전망을 하고 있습니다. '모든 이스라엘 정착촌의 철수 없이는 평화는 불가능할 것'이라고 한 주민은 지적합니다.
4. 마을 북쪽은 이스라엘이 쳐놓은 콘크리트 분리장벽으로 예루살렘과 단절돼있습니다. 팔레스타인 무장단체의 공격을 막기 위한 게 이스라엘측의 설명입니다. 팔레스타인 택스 운전기사, 라도바시 씨는 '미국과 이스라엘이 뭐라고 말하든 말레 아두밈은 계속 커져서, 결국 베다니를 완전 고립시킬 것'이라고 전망합니다. 그는 '한쪽은 분리장벽, 한쪽은 정착촌으로 막혀서 감옥에 갇힌 꼴'이 될 거라며 우려합니다.
5. 팔레스타인 당국은 미국이 더 큰 압력을 가해주길 희망하고 있습니다. 그러나 이스라엘이 서안 지구내 주요 정착촌을 포기할 것으로는 기대하지 않는다는 부시 대통령의 발언에 대해선 내심 좌절감을 느끼고 있습니다.

6. 가자에서의 완전히 철수하고 서안 일부 지역에서 철수하겠다는 샤론 이스라엘 총리의 결정에 미국은 크게 환영하고 있지만, 철수에 반대하는 이스라엘인들은 텔아비브 주변 학교 2백여곳의 정문을 걸어 잠그고 <유태인은 유태인을 쫓아내지 않는다>라는 프랭카드를 내거는 등 항의 시위를 계속하고 있습니다.
