1. A TV cameraman’s job is to capture the news. Sometimes they do more. Bobby Hughes did much more. Here’s CNN’s Carol Lin.

2. Responding to car fires is just part of the job for KTVI photographer Bobby Hughes. So when this car flipped, crashed into a building, and caught on fire, he was there within minutes.

"And the first thing I saw was a vehicle on fire against a building and I saw several people standing outside and of course I thought everybody had gotten out of the vehicle, and a lady said no, there's still someone inside."
3. Still shooting, Hughes set about saving a life.
"And then I saw a man's head pop up from the passenger window and he collapsed and fell outside the vehicle so I ran around. I didn't realize I had my camera still rolling and saw he was on fire.”
Helped by other witnesses, Hughes managed to drag the driver, Corey Abernathy, twenty feet from the car and put out the flames that threatened his life. Abernathy's brothers are very grateful.
“The cameraman had pulled him out you know, how he just happened to be there I don’t know, but I'm thanking him and I'm thanking God same time.”
“That car burned from the front, if it had burned from the back it would have exploded.”
4. Abernathy is listed in good condition with a broken leg and burns. Sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime story, right? Well this isn't the first time Hughes has helped save a life.

"This happened to me just a couple of years ago. In that instance I did set my camera down and there was a little bit more physical activity, I actually had to break a window and crawl into the vehicle to pull the lady out."
5. But Bobby Hughes is modest about his rescue efforts
"I've been shooting news so long that camera's a part of my body now. So my first thought was to get the guy away."

2. 차량 화재 장면은 TV 방송국 카메라맨인 바비 휴즈가 포착해야 하는 영상입니다. 자동차 전복 사고로 차에 불이 붙었다는 소식이 들리자, 바비는 현장으로 달려갔습니다.

"건물에 충돌했던 차엔 거센 불길이 일었습니다. 차에 탔던 사람이 모두 빠져나왔을 거라고 생각했는데, 아직 차 안에 사람이 있다고 한 여성이 외쳤습니다."
3. 촬영 중였던 그에겐 목숨을 구해야 한다는 생각이 들었습니다.
"자동차 창문 밖으로 한 남자가 머리를 내밀더니 자동차 밖으로 나와 쓰러졌습니다. 촬영 중이란 사실도 잊고 남자에게 달려갔는데, 그의 몸에 불이 붙어 있었습니다."
바비는 주위 사람들과 함께 코리 애버내시를 차에서 6미터 가량 옮기고 그의 몸에 붙은 불을 껐습니다. 코리의 가족들은 바비를 생명의 은인으로 여깁니다.
"바비 씨가 제 동생을 구했습니다. 어떻게 그 자리에 있게 됐는진 모르지만, 그에게 정말 감사합니다."
"만약 차 뒤쪽에 불이 붙었다면, 차가 폭발했을 겁니다."
4. 코리는 다리 골절과 화상을 입었지만, 상태는 비교적 양호했습니다. 놀랍게도 바비가 자신의 몸을 던져 위기에 처한 이를 구한 것은 이번이 처음이 아닙니다.

"몇 년전에도 비슷한 일이 있었는데, 당시엔 카메라를 내려놓은 채 창문을 깨고 차 안에 들어가 한 여성을 끌어냈습니다."
5. 바비는 쏟아지는 칭찬에도 겸손한 모습을 보였습니다. 그에겐 이제 카메라가 몸의 일부와 같아, 카메라를 내려놓을 생각도 안하고 서둘러 구조에 나섰다고 합니다. |
